Defeat the Heat - Join us!

Escape the Heat Tonight!

 Dash into the Poisoned Pen

Free

Don't let the heat win!

If you've never discovered the Valley of Sun's most charming spot, do so tonight. If you are a long time fan, come out to the Poisoned Pen Bookstore and see what's new in the stacks then settle in for a unique conversation between 2 crime writers.

Jillian Lauren, already a NYT best selling author, has aimed her pen at America's most prolific serial killer. A man who killed his way across the continent for decades with shocking ease.

Sam Little chose his prey carefully, women it would be difficult to track.  He sometimes murdered with such skill the cases were listed as "natural causes" or "OD."

Lauren stepped into the gruesome, body-strewn path Little left and searched for these untold stories.

But she also goes directly to the man --the monster-- himself wheedling out his secrets and seeking the answer to that most maddening of questions, Why?

Tonight at 7pm I'll be asking her questions of my own.  We'd be so happy if you'd join us.

A Little Dollop of Happy

Crime takes me terrible places. Sad places. Outrageous places.

So the opposite, a sudden discovery of pure cheerful-happy, makes me feel like a luscious swirl of molten gold and melty chocolate is pouring over me.

This afternoon I noticed a tweet from Dick Van Dyke asking for requests. You know, like a piano playa' in a saloon.  I saw the responses he got and added my own. Not too long after I saw him post a no-frills tweet with a link in it. I clicked on the link, noting happily that it was labeled with the very first request on the list.
The many faces of D. Van D. make crime author go from sad to happy!

What could possibly make you smile more than Dick Van Dyke singing in his living room, apparently, with what I assume are family members, a number they cooked up instantaneously from a twitter request?  If this does not make you smile, you are a lost cause.

Look at how much fun Dick Van Dyke is having in his living room. And look how he can't contain himself from sharing that playful outlook on life with a world that is full of madness and sorrow. I know nothing about Dick Van Dyke's personal life other than his brother is fabulously talented and that his son and grandson made their way into his show, Diagnosis: Murder.

But his public life certainly provided many moments of magic and laughter for my own personal life. From Bert the chimney sweep in Mary Poppins through that weekly trip over the ottoman in Rob Petrie's living room to the hapless divorced dad re-wooing Debbie Reynolds in Divorce American Style and so many others, all Dick Van Dyke has to do is appear on screen for me to start smiling. Is it any different for anybody else?

I spent today talking to victims of crime and re-reading my essay on the downward spiral they sometimes take and giving my thoughts on the criminal mind to TV producers. None of these are happy thoughts. Then Dick Van Dyke popped up directly from his own living room to mine, like a jack-in-the-box whose spring can arc all the way from California's beaches to Arizona's deserts.

Or like a chimney sweep who can jump from a sooty hearth directly into a bright sidewalk painting....

Awwww....for just a moment or two, no more crime, gunshots, or twisted psyches, just rivers of melty-golden-chocolate!  Thank you, Mr. Van Dyke!

"Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand." Mark Twain, I wish you could have known Rob Petrie. Hit me, baby!

Jeff Ashton's Book Cover

Looks like publisher HarperCollins scrambled through the weekend to get a cover together for the Jeff Ashton book.  Here it is.

I knew it would have photos of the two of them, fascinating antagonists that they are: the scholarly, science-boy jurist at the end of his highly accomplished career and the confabulating high school dropout club-maven just embarking on life.  Their images are famous enough to carry the book cover through (although I wouldn't be surprised to see the design change again before publication. See "crashing a book" post below) though the design is simple and I know he will get great sales.

Authors do obsess about their book covers and this is a moment for me to say I confess the team at Penguin did a better job on mine. She* is famous (see 48 Hours: Diary of a Showgirl, and ID Deadly Women) but my cover, in my humble opinion, is more artistic, more intriguing.

*"She" = Marjorie Orbin, convicted dismemberment killer

FAQ: Is that really Marjorie Orbin on the cover? (scroll down half a tic to see)
Answer: Certainly! That photo was taken at the Maricopa County Jail while Marjorie talked to me. I am sitting just inches from her, on the freedom side of the steel grid. You can see both of us at the same grid here and compare to cover. Many more pics related to Marjorie Orbin on this site. Just click the tag below.

(click on these 1 or 2x & they should become legible)

Pages 1 & 2 of Marjorie Orbin's love letter to Larry as transcribed by police. Compare to her description and his description of the affair in Chapter 10 in my book, WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED.

How Much Marjorie Orbin Must Pay

The day the photo on the book cover was taken: Author Camille Kimball interviewing Marjorie Orbin in jail

Marjorie Orbin was convicted in 2010 of fraud and the dismemberment murder of Jay Orbin, the devoted father of her child. Many months later, paper work has gone through regarding the restitution she must pay and to whom.

To Jay's father and mother, her former in-laws, the court calculates $6,014.00. This amount, clearly, is not about how much Jay was worth as a person and what they've lost. It is about what actual expenses they incurred during the course of the case. And, even at that, it is not a full amount. The courts have formulas for these things. If Marjorie ever does make any money, these are liens that will be a priority.

To Jake Orbin, Jay's big brother, Marjorie will have to pay $12,200.00 if she ever gets any cash. Jake is guardian of his nephew now. Jake went to a lot of trouble trying to discover his brother's fate and then trying to make the world a safe place for the little boy left behind.

Finally, Marjorie will have to pay $8,539.38 to the person who lost the most, her own son. Noah lost both a father and a mother and an entire childhood when Jay Orbin died. But it is in his capacity as heir to the estate that Marjorie defrauded that Noah becomes his mother's creditor.

That's a total of $26,753.38

I am a little disturbed by a TV show that pops up from time to time. The show states as fact that Jay was "obsessed" with Marjorie for a decade. But there's no evidence of that. The entire Orbin family had never heard of her until her sudden wedding to Jay in Las Vegas. Marjorie loves to tell the story that Jay was pining for her for 10 years and that he pressed her into marriage. But Jay is not here to tell his side and the evidence of his alleged 10 years of passion does not exist. The whirlwind wedding in Vegas was far more the much-married Marjorie's style than the family oriented Jay's.

Marjorie writes to me that she is doing fine in state prison. The food is better than in county jail. She gets her beloved physical exercise. And she's confident she'll win a new trial through her appeals.  (peek inside the book here or here)

Stark Country, Hot Justice

This week I dropped in on the courtroom where prosecutors and defense attorneys were haggling over the last details that would determine James Arthur Ray’s fate. I sat behind his parents. He barely glanced at them when he walked past them toward his seat.

The courthouse where the trial takes place is remarkable, probably unique in America, in that it is adjacent to a wild animal park where a rhinoceros, tigers and other giant predators roam in close-to-nature conditions, Look very closely at this photo, to the left you can see a green sign, the familiar green with white lettering of much govt signage. That green sign says “Superior Court” with an arrow pointing across the parking lot from the tigers!

The green sign is left of the stop sign, just below where the near horizon meets the far mesa-type hill .

To get an idea of the terrain in which Kirby Brown, James Shore, and Liz Neuman lost their lives, here is a view from the courthouse front door. That vista is probably in excess of hundred miles to the north, not really comprehensible from this pixel resolution.

The day I went, it was mild enough by Arizona standards, but before I knew it, I desperately needed water and downed as much as I could whenever I passed a fountain in the courthouse and as soon as I could sought out a restaurant where they’d serve it to me in big icy glasses.

I’m a seasoned Arizonan and I know the lethal combination of sunshine and dry, dry air.

What if I put myself in the mindset of a Canadian or Chicagoan, who has never faced these sweeping vistas of hot desiccation nor pondered what it might take to survive in them? I imagine paying a lot of money to a guy beaming with confidence and believing he knows the terrain. Why wouldn’t I believe that?

Experienced Arizonans know the signs of heat exhaustion and will not tend to confuse them with higher spirituality. Someone who’s lived in wetter, colder climates may not know the difference. And since heat exhaustion will diminish your mental functioning, your ability to critically think yourself out of the situation is going to lessen more and more with each sweatily passing moment.

That’s why I wanted to post these pictures. You’ve seen the face of James Arthur Ray, but have you seen the face of the land? I hope these photos, taken with nothing more than a cell phone, give you a glimpse.

In October 2009, just after the launch of my first book and shortly after the trials of serial killers Sam Dieteman and Dale Hausner, dozens of people seeking enlightenment entered a sweat lodge commissioned by motivational speaker James Arthur Ray. Ray first came to real prominence in the film, The Secret.

On that October day, three people lost their lives in that sweat lodge. The news of sudden, massive and suspicious tragedy pouring out of northern Arizona, yanked my attention out of the criminal trials I had been focusing on. I knew the ugly journey through hospitals, cemeteries and courtrooms was just beginning for a new group of people.

Hey! It's not easy taking a photo of yourself! Especially in bright Arizona sunlight making the view screen moot.. This one didn't quite capture the letters on the courthouse!
