Facing Marjorie Orbin For the First Time

Pssst! Going to jail, buying documents, and everything else it takes to get this kind of info for the blog takes time and money! Every time you make a purchase here, it helps me be able to do more for you!

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO MEET A KILLER FACE TO FACE?

"Our voices reverberated in the all consuming presence of metal in the stall, making our voices both shrill and muffled...."

FROM THE INTRODUCTION TO "MARJORIE ORBIN & ME: THE RAW JAIL TAPES"

"For months I had sat behind Marjorie as she faced a parade of evidence and witnesses, gruesome and blistering. Although she and I had often been no more than normal conversational distance from one another, we had never spoken a word. Similar to the gritty Durango Jail, the genteel courtrooms in downtown Phoenix are also plastered with signs warning of the grim fallout of trying to communicate with a defendant in custody.  She knew I was there, watching her life picked apart to the most minute and unflattering detail, but we had not so much as nodded our heads at each other.

"Today I would finally introduce myself to her.

"Even to the most exemplary citizen of pristine reputation, meeting a professional author who intends to write about your life whether you like it or not would be a disconcerting experience. I knew this. And it made me nervous. What attitude would Marjorie reveal to me regarding my work? I am a veteran journalist but, even so, the thought of a woman capable of taking an electric saw to the father of her child, a man guilty in her eyes of nothing more than being both sexually unsatisfactory to her and irritatingly alive, the thought of such a person becoming angry at me ran shivers up and down my spine and made my breathing quick and shallow..."

Secret Life of the Soundbites: Bridal to Homicidal

What's it like to be alone with a convicted killer?
In a very, very tiny room?

 Want it? Click this!
Or browse at the Bookstore tab

You just watched "Bridal to Homicidal" on E! Network.  You heard Marjorie Orbin's voice.

She was talking to me when that tape was recorded.

Listening to those jail tapes as I prepared for the E! show, I remembered there was a lot more this remarkable woman had said to me that had never seen the light of day. I suddenly realized there was now a way I could let you in on that....and at the same time explain why E! needed my tapes.

You saw me, in the white suit, talking to the camera on "Bridal to Homicidal." You also see me here standing next to Marjorie. Why do I look so different in the two images?  I realized I had a chance to explain that, too.  (Hint: it has nothing to do with makeup or lighting)

So what I've done is prepare a special edition True Crime Short specifically to be a companion to the TV shows you see on Marjorie Orbin, especially "Bridal to Homicidal."

This True Crime Short is not a re-hash of what you've already seen on TV or read in my book, WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED.

No.

It contains selected excerpts of interesting things that Marjorie told me on tape that did not make it on TV or into the book.  It is a collection of soundbites that either stand alone or are wrapped up in personal impressions I made at the time. The style is akin to what you might have read in "Reporter's Notebook" sections in your favorite newspaper or TV newschannel, only a lot longer.

What kind of thing you will find in MARJORIE ORBIN AND ME: THE RAW JAIL TAPES ?

Glad you asked.  Here is the Table of Contents:

I. Marjorie and Camille Meet at Last

II.  Marjorie Talks About Jay

III. Childhood Dreams and Nightmares

IV.  Small Groups of Soundbites by Topic:
On Talking to Me
On Stripping
The Other Husbands
On Friends
On Work
On Jail and Prison
On Relationships
"Joke's On Me"

V. What We Said to Each Other

And why didn't these soundbites make it into the book or onto TV? Well, I've put the answer inside the True Crime Short.  It is available for your E-reader. The publishing industry is changing and I'm glad to have a convenient and affordable way to bring you bonus material.  This is an experiment for me. Let me know what you think about it.

Hint! Get it before the price goes up!  Just 99 cents right now!

BRIDAL TO HOMICIDAL will be playing soundbites of Marjorie that I recorded myself during my one on one chats with her. Come back here after the show for a special surprise about that!

New Show on Marjorie Orbin on E!

E! Producer Steve Filmer holds the slate for the camera
If you just watched the Scorned TV show on Marjorie Orbin, wait till you see the new E! show we just shot!  E! came to town on a balmy Friday in May and put me in the hot seat.

Actually, the crew arranged things so the lights, which usually have me cooked to a crisp within 20 minutes, were as cool as a Seattle morning all afternoon. Thanks, guys!  This show has an unforgettable title. I'll let you know what it is as soon as the network unsilences me. ;)   It shouldn't be long, the show airs in June!

They will cover territory you didn't get to hear about in Scorned, so you'll want to tune in and see what you missed.  In the meantime, be sure to click on the Marjorie Orbin label on this site (below or to the left) in order to see lots of photos that couldn't make it on TV--and to find out where Marjorie is now! Follow the links here and you can even read her love letter, see how much she owes, and what happened at her appeal.

Marjorie Orbin -- Where is She Now?

From deep in my private vault--
for viewers of Scorned! Bridal to Homicidal, 48 Hours, Deadly Women
"Director's Cut" extra material for just 99 cents!

Read a short sample by clicking on the post "Facing Marjorie for the First Time."

Marjorie Orbin's full story plays out in my book published by Penguin (Berkley), WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED.  There you can find the details of her marriages, love affairs, and the awful crime at the center of her story.   But after you read the last page, you'll be curious about Marjorie now.

Inmate 250060 M ORBIN Image
Marjorie Orbin's glamour days are over. Wearing an orange prison suit.

She continues to live her life...behind bars. She's been out of the county jail for about 2 years now and in the state system. The last time I talked to her in person she was looking forward to the transfer for a variety of reasons, one of them being inmates are fed three times a day in the state prison rather than early morning and mid-evening (no lunch) at the jail.  After settling into state prison, she wrote me that she was "happy" there.

According to prison records, she has recently had a minor disciplinary infraction. In February (2012), prison administrators report they found her guilty of illicit "barter/trade/sell."  This is a Class C infraction which can be settled with relatively minor disciplinary action including confiscation, loss of privileges, or extra duty. It can even be "settled informally."

Even with the violation, Marjorie has also recently earned a reduction in her "Risk to the Public" score. She came into the system as a maximum level 5. This is based mostly on the crime itself and other similar immutable factors.  A few days after being found guilty of the "barter/trade/sell" infraction, she was downgraded to a level 4 in her "Risk to the Public" score.

Marjorie is currently doing a work assignment, according to prison records, as a "kitchen helper."

In the Maricopa County Jail, she wore black and white stripes, see below.

She now wears the orange uniform of the state system. There is no change, by the way, in Marjorie's sentence. For more on that, see the post on her appeal: http://camillekimball.blogspot.com/2012/01/marjorie-orbin-subject-of-my-book-what.html

Marjorie Orbin Juror Speaks Out

New! True Crime Short just 99 cents!
Special for viewers of "Bridal to Homicidal" on E! Network

With the airing of shows like 48 Hours: Mystery (Diary of a Showgirl), Scorned (The Showgirl and the Salesman), and others, thousands of new people are arriving at this blog every day. They are sharing their opinions in the comments sections and asking the questions inspired by the shows. I'm answering some questions, but couldn't have been more delighted to discover commenting here a source a level higher than mine in the heirarchy of the case. I attended the trial, but this commenter was part of the trial.

We have a member of the jury speaking out in this post.

Although this juror did not identify by name, I recognize certain "insider" details in this posted comment that are consistent with the actual jury.  All the thoughts shared here are consistent with what several jurors did share with me face to face.  Juries frequently want to keep their privacy, particularly in a murder case. There are many reasons for that, safety being a prominent one. Serving on a jury in a case like this is a very rattling experience and I will absolutely respect this juror's privacy and anonymity on the web.

But if you have just watched one of these shows, you might very well want to take a look at what this juror has to say.  The juror addresses why Marjorie Orbin received the sentence she did and the fairness of the trial, among other things:

Camille,
Hello from juror # - oops, I seem to have forgotten my juror number. One of my fellow jurors just sent out an email wondering how Marjorie's appeal turned out and I sent them all back a link to your blog.

We all agreed that the evidence of premeditation was overwhelming.

To kaleigh_harris1
[a commenter earlier in this thread--ck] - had you been in the court for the trial and listened in on our deliberations you would be in little doubt that she did receive a fair trial and a just verdict. Our concerns during the sentencing phase of the trial were, in part, the welfare of Noah and the possibility that he might at some point in his future life wish to see his mother.

To anonymous
[see clickable link above for thread--ck] who wondered how she could have moved Jay Orbins body to the desert - don't forget that she moved him in parts and that she had a ramp she could use to move the body up into her vehicle. Also, she was a physical fitness fanatic and was much stronger than you imagine.

One final thought that came to me as I was reading over the comments above - we did discuss the theory presented by the defense that pointed to Larry as the guilty party. The problem with that theory is that there was no evidence presented that would support the theory and it seemed to us to be little more than a distraction provided by a defense that had no real exonerating evidence to present.

Thank you, Juror #Oops!  I am happy to bring your insights to a larger audience. This case has received so much attention, that people around the country are second-guessing this jury's decision without enough information to go on.

Of course, a lot more information and detail is to be found in the book, WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED. It is available at libraries, on e-readers, and wherever books are sold. I add followup and supplemental information on the case here at this site from time to time. And what could be better than highlighting the fresh comments of an actual juror?

I do have several photos of many of the jurors, taken with their consent and well after the trial. But in the spirit of preserving their anonymity on the web, I have chosen not to post these photos. It has been tempting! So glad to be able to showcase this message representing the Orbin jury instead.

This is the Award-winning book on Marjorie Orbin

Marjorie Orbin's Boyfriend?

You just saw a show about Marjorie Orbin on TV, right? You've got a lot of questions, especially about that boyfriend, I know, I know. You wonder why he was never charged, why police never fingered him.  Believe me, they tried....
Want to ask her the tough questions?
I already did.

See what I found out...

Excerpt from WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED
"Didn't she have something to say about her boyfriend? Exactly how long had she known this guy Larry Weisberg?
'Three or four months,' Marjorie said.
                 'He's using you,' said Lane.

'Using me for what?' she asked.
Lane said Weisberg was a big guy, a tough guy, he must be jealous of Jay. Marjorie said there wasn't really anything for him to be jealous of...."

People often ask me if that's a real photo on the cover of the book. Yes! It is! I am just on the other side of the metal grill, asking her everything you want to know. See the same day without all the artwork and showing more of the "cage" area we were in by clicking here.

Scorned TV Show--The Showgirl and the Salesman (behind the scenes!)

Marjorie Orbin in jail talking to True Crime author Camille Kimball
The TV show Scorned, in which I appeared as myself while an actress portrayed Marjorie Orbin, raised a lot of questions for viewers. First, see Marjorie for real in the photo above. That's after several years in jail. The actress portrayed a much younger version of Marjorie. Marjorie's hair was platinum at that time though, while the actress portrayed her as a honeyblond.

Here are the most common questions raised by the show--

1. What about Marjorie's lover, Larry? Was he a suspect or did he just get off by testifying against her?

My Answer:
The knee jerk reaction for 100% of people first hearing about this crime, including police, is to look first to blame the bodybuilding boyfriend of Marjorie. Larry behaved badly in the early days of the investigation. He was physically strong and powerful. He was sleeping with a married woman. Who wouldn't immediately want to finger him as the culprit?

New! True Crime Short just 99 cents!
Special for viewers of "Bridal to Homicidal" on E! Network
Viewers of Scorned!, 48 hours, and Deadly Women will love it, too!

Larry was scrutinized intensely for years. But not a shred of evidence was ever developed against him. There isn't even any evidence that he knew his girlfriend was actually considered to be the wife of someone else. Taking all evidence together, some investigators concluded that Marjorie, far from being love-struck at the gym, had coldly selected Larry to be the fall guy for a plan she already had in her head. He certainly did fit nicely into the terrible plot that unfolded. But everything Larry told police could be corroborated by other evidence. He seems to have been ignorant of Jay's fate and even of Jay's true role in Marjorie's life.  There isn't even the slightest whisper that Larry knew about it afterward and helped her in anyway.

Marjorie, of course, maintains that it was Larry who committed the crime and she who was ignorant of what he was up to.

As for immunity, yes, Larry was granted a certain limited kind of immunity in order to testify. But let me be clear that none of Larry's testimony contained any knowledge of the crime. He just testified about things like how he met Marjorie and how often he went to the house and other details of their romance.

The immunity he received--just good lawyering on the part of his own attorney--is called "use immunity." That means that police can still charge Larry Weisberg with a crime any time they develop evidence against him--they just can't use his own testimony for the purpose. This limits the police pretty much nada. Larry's own testimony contains not even a teensy bit of suspicious material. And after years of scrutiny, there's no suspicion to be found against him elsewhere, either, apparently.

Larry looked good, but he did not look the same age as Marjorie. Compare to the actor on Scorned.
Larry acted stupidly, but not criminally.

2.  Why don't Marjorie's other ex-husbands come forward to cast light on her character?

My Answer:
When I wrote my book, WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED, a couple of her husbands that I contacted did not know she had become embroiled in a murder case until I reached them. They were upset and did not want to talk about her.

One former boyfriend did have a lot to say. He was still fond of her, in a way, but also was afraid of her and relieved she was behind bars.

Another former boyfriend not only came forward to testify at her trial in her behalf, but also paid substantial legal bills for her well into six figures.  He is still very loyal to her.

And one former husband contacted police and had quite a bit to say about her. His stories did not make her look good. Prosecutors made the decision not to use this information at trial and this ex-husband did not testify. I also made the decision not to use the material in the book. The information was highly inflammatory and impossible to corroborate, so while it may have been true, it was too unfair to Marjorie.

By the way, Marjorie also has said a lot of highly inflammatory things that can not be corroborated and I would not put them in the book nor say them on TV. Like a prosecutor, I have certain standards that have to met before I will use information. This standard applies to both sides.

So the bottom line is most of Marjorie's ex-husbands, boyfriends, and lovers are unlikely to show up on TV talking about her. She is a sore subject for most of them.

3. Did Jay Orbin ever date non-strippers?

My Answer:
Sure he did! He was a very nice man and he would have been better off if, for instance, he had married his high school sweetheart, who continued to be a friend of the family even after his death and helped support his loved ones through the trial.

Why did he marry Marjorie?  My own theory is derived from something Marjorie said directly to me when we were talking as that photo above was taken. She said she studies people as soon as she meets them to evaluate them, how much can she "get away with" with this person?  "I will roll right over you if I can," she said.

I believe when Jay came to Las Vegas, Marjorie was good and ready to leave the stripper life. She saw Jay as her ticket out. She said and did whatever it took to get him to volunteer to be that ticket and convinced him it was his own idea to boot.

I hope you enjoyed the show Scorned on ID. I'm happy to answer your questions. I enjoyed the time I spent with the producers of the show. There are always a million different ways to tell a story and, as expected, they told this one differently than I did. Many of the statements presented as "fact" in the TV show were from a single source, Marjorie herself. Since Marjorie is a convicted liar, in my book I always make sure to point out the other pieces of information that complete the picture. For instance, Marjorie says a lot of derogatory things about Jay's sexual prowess but Jay is not here to defend himself. One fact we do have, though, is that Marjorie needed fertility treatments while Jay did not. Therefore, we know that some of the insulting things she says about his private nature are absolutely untrue. Please keep these types of things in mind as you watch the show. You can always get a copy of WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED (download it or get the paperback--click below) and compare my version to theirs.

Another thing I'd like to mention is that the detective on the show, Dave Barnes, did not testify in Marjorie's trial (except for an extremely limited time at the very end) and did not help convict her. He is a very controversial figure in and of himself. The detective who was instrumental in putting Marjorie behind bars is Jan Butcher, whose voice can be heard on the tape of the phone call  Scorned put on your TV screens. They only identified her on TV, though, as "Phoenix Police."  I know Det. Butcher declined to talk to Scorned.  She did talk to me.

Listen to it on TV, then learn more about that very remarkable phone conversation in WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED.

Marjorie Orbin's Appeal

ADD again: Click here for video and new show info!
ADD: Did you just watch Scorned on ID? Click here for questions and discussion after the show.

This is the book about Marjorie Orbin
Arizona Court of Appeals
AZ Court of Appeals
Marjorie Orbin, the subject of my book, WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED, is a very confident woman. From the Maricopa County Jail, and later from an Arizona state prison, she would write to me that she “knew” she would prevail upon appeal. In fact, shortly after her sentencing, she wrote me that she expected to be out of prison in “a year and a half.”

Well, she has just had the second anniversary of that sentencing, but she’s still behind bars. Because the Arizona Court of Appeals has denied her wish for a new trial.

If you have read WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED, you know that there were numerous problems with Marjorie’s trial. Bizarre, unforeseen twists and turns in that proceeding gave Marjorie and her supporters room to hope that the whole shebang would be tossed on the slag heap and she could try all over again with a shiny new jury who had never heard of her.

But Marjorie may have failed to consider the intricate subtleties of law. In a unanimous three judge decision, all the troubles that plagued Marjorie’s trial have been deemed, in one way or another, irrelevant to the outcome.
orbin
Marjorie Orbin w/ a CBS camera

Perhaps the most publicity-oriented complaint Marjorie and her attorneys had about her trial centered on video tapes that were used by the TV show 48 Hours. In an episode they named “Diary of a Showgirl,” the case of Marjorie Orbin played out frame by frame. As described in WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED, an angry hearing took place after the show in which Marjorie’s lawyers unsuccessfully argued some home videos in Diary of a Showgirl should have been given to them to use in the trial, not to a TV crew to use on the air.

The Court of Appeals has ruled that, first, the tapes were never in the possession of the prosecution but only in that of Jake Orbin, Jay’s brother. Jake qualified as Jay’s heir and executor and, under the law, a victim of the crime. He had no obligation to turn the tapes over. Moreover, “the court found Defendant had personal knowledge of the existence of the tapes yet never requested them until after the verdicts.”     This very point was made, in my presence, by Judge Anderson himself at the original hearing. How could the tapes have been “undisclosed” when Marjorie herself knew about them all along?  After all, she appears in them! The Court of Appeals, as did Judge Anderson, seemed to consider it some kind of mendacious gamesmanship that the defense would ignore the tapes until the trial was over, the verdict was in, and some strangers happened to put them on TV.

The other big ticket item was the investigation of then Homicide Detective Dave Barnes. The court ruled that this spectacle, as eyebrow-raising and unusual as it was, did not “go the foundation of [Marjorie’s] case.”  They also said Judge Anderson’s handling of the calamity did not impair any of her rights.

dave barnes.jpg
Former detective Dave Barnes
Okay, so there was another big ticket item: Prosecutorial Misconduct. This was a complicated affair that you’ll have to read the book to unravel, I don’t have enough space here. But the three appellate judges studied it and concluded, “We find no abuse of discretion.”

On another issue, one in which Marjorie’s defense was trying to blame Marjorie’s former lover for the murder--a defense known as “3rd party culpability”--the court ruled the defense’s position was “an incorrect statement of the law and would have misled the  jury.”

And finally, Marjorie’s lawyers had argued about expert testimony that they had wanted disclosed much earlier. Of note to those also following the sweat lodge trial, the trial court basically ruled that the prosecutor botching a timely disclosure does not magically create reversible error. In several pages of legalese, the Court of Appeals spelled out that while the prosecution had, indeed, botched it, the trial court made sure the defense ultimately had ample time to review and present the material. No harm, no foul.

Marjorie has other appeal options open to her. The process will continue. But she has missed her goal of being out “in a year and a half.”  And the Orbin family is spared the ordeal of going through a whole new trial.
