The courtroom for the Jodi Arias trial is a large one, almost cavernous, with an extra pair of tables behind the attorneys making the "well" area extra grand. This has the effect of putting those of us sitting in the rows of the gallery at a gaping distance from the players. Viewers on TV often have a better view of Juan Martinez, Kirk Nurmi, and of Jodi Arias herself than we do.
But one thing the TV viewers never could see was the jury.
That is, until this morning. When I went to bed last night after a long day, ending with an appearance with Jordan Rose and Mark Victor on KPNX at the top of the 10:00 news, I knew the faces and demeanor of the Jodi Arias jurors well but not their names.
When I got up this morning, large as life there was William Zervakos outed by ABC and telling Good Morning America's (and former Phoenix reporter) Elizabeth Vargas what he, as jury foreman, thought of Jodi Ann Arias.
Zervakos said he felt Travis Alexander had "mentally and verbally abused" Jodi. He was "sure in his mind," he said firmly.
Although I didn't know his name until this morning, Zervakos was quite familiar to me. In that walloping open plain of a courtroom well he sat in one of the closest seats to us every day. Picture the courtroom you have seen on TV. The judge's bench backs onto the east wall. We in the gallery are stacked up on the west wall. The jury box is on the north wall. Juror number one, a woman, sat in the front row of the jury box at the east end, a short skip from the witness box. Juror number eighteen, who turns out to be William Zervakos, sat in the back row at the west end of the jury box and therefore near us in the gallery.
I had often watched Zervakos during the trial. It was natural, since I could see him clearly unlike so many of the other actors in the drama. He is a very solidly built guy who usually wore golf shirts. Sometimes at lunch time I would see him in the courthouse's small cafeteria dining room. He always had a book with him and kept to himself. Whenever I spotted him there, I had a kneejerk reaction of instantly reviewing in my mind any conversation I'd had in the last 30 minutes or double checking the positioning of my laptop screen for visibility to others.
The day of the 1st deadlock note, southeast corner of the Jodi Arias courthouse |
Like most of his fellow jurors, Zervakos resembled a statue most of the time during testimony. But one day I tweeted to my followers that I saw a juror nodding in agreement with a witness. I can now disclose that the juror I watched nod his head positively in concurrence with a witness was number 18, William Zervakis. It came when one of the trial's psychologists was saying that what happens to us as children, especially abuse, shapes who we become as adults.
He did it in a most definite way, not just one vague dip of the chin but a clear series of nods to several statements from the stand. My twittles were instantly panicked, engaging with my tweet, feeling it meant he "bought" the defense theory that Travis was abusive to Jodi.
After spending several hours searching my old tweets, I discover twitter won't let me go back further than April 17 so I am unable to access those tweets to post them here. If there are any twitter wranglers out there who know how to access the full archive, please contact me.
To those panicked twittles on that day, I responded that the juror nodding his head to this testimony didn't necessarily mean what they feared it meant. Maybe he just recognized the phenomenon, maybe it resonated with his own life.
Now that William Zervakos has spoken out, we know that I was in the wrong and the instincts of my twittles were right on target. He believes, "sure" in his mind, that Travis was "mentally and verbally abusive" to Jodi.
In his first interview, Zervakos also told how Jodi "didn't look like a murderer." In this statement, Zervakos clearly revealed a gender bias. If the facts of the case had been the same but the deceased was the woman and the defendant was the man, few can reasonably doubt that an Arizona jury would send him anywhere but death row. In fact, one day while waiting for the Jodi Arias trial day to begin I watched Judge Sherry Stephens wrap up the case of Dzevad Selimovic. My twittles rapidly became interested in the case, so I wrote about it and you can click here<< to find it and his pic. Selimovic viciously killed his ex-girlfriend. From What Zervakos has said, Selimovic would "look like a killer" to him. Selimovic didn't want to face a jury full of William Zervakoses. He pled out and got life.
But the facts of the two cases have many parallels. A breakup of lovers, jealousy, an inability to let go, a long trip, and a horrific and fatal head wound with the victim left to die in their own home. It's even eerily true that both murders began in the bathroom, with the injured victim trying to escape to the hall. Selimovic, like Jodi, depicted his victim as previously abusive to him. In Selimovic's case, his allegation involved finances but also matters of the heart. Two similar sets of facts, but nobody is much interested in the brawny man's excuses for doing what he did to another human being. Interestingly, Selimovic actually inflicted fewer wounds than did the slender girl with the soft voice.
Speaking of that soft voice, in one of the many TV interviews I did on the day of the deadlock mistrial, I told ABC15 reporter Amy Murphy that I found it to be the scariest thing about Jodi Arias. With someone like Selimovic, if he randomly met him on the street a William Zervakos would keep his guard up. Even with convicted dismemberment killer Marjorie Orbin, whom I have interviewed personally in a small cell, not knowing what she did Zervakos would keep his guard up at least as much as one does with any strong adult personality.
But what is the impact of Jodi's stinginess with the decibels? The whisper-soft tones cause the other person to lean in. And to come close is to become vulnerable. It was reported to me that one of the reporters who went to interview Jodi Arias remarked that, far from being creeped out by Jodi's presence, felt like "giving her a hug" afterward. I did not take this to mean the reporter became a fan of the convicted first degree murderer, but that the reporter acknowledged the insidious nature of Jodi's personality. To me, this is exactly what the jury foreman fell prey to, Jodi's well-polished technique of getting people to lower their guard, to pull them in close, to make them more vulnerable than she is.
This external softness, sadly, had a lot to do with how Travis let his guard down and leaned in too close to Jodi Arias. Did Travis have angry words for Jodi at times? Certainly he did. They are memorialized in electronic messages. But prosecution psychologist Dr. Janeen DeMarte testified Travis burst out in angry language when he had a reason to and reasonable people could relate to the reasons she listed, as memorialized in these tweets of mine from inside the courthouse as she was speaking:

Photogs aimed at courthouse doors as I step out, the day of the mistrial, but jurors were elusive |
Dr D explaining Travis's angry language occurred when he "felt lied to, betrayed--" SIDEBAR #JodiArias
— Camille Kimball (@CamilleKimball) April 18, 2013
The pattern Dr D saw was that he reacted that way when he felt his privacy invaded, etc. No indication of it outside these. #JodiAriasArizona Republic reporter Michael Kiefer captured part of this testimony in this tweet:
— Camille Kimball (@CamilleKimball) April 18, 2013
DeMarte says Alexander used bad names "very rarely." Willmott: define rare, then cuts DeMarte off when she implies it was deserved. What were some of the ways in which Jodi lied to, betrayed, or invaded the privacy of Travis to make him so angry? Jodi did all of the following things to Travis:
— Michael Kiefer (@michaelbkiefer) April 18, 2013
- stole an engagement ring he had purchased for a girlfriend before he ever met Jodi
- slashed his tires, more than once
- snuck into his home repeatedly, even hiding behind the Christmas tree
- manipulated his social media accounts with his stolen passwords
- sent harassing anonymous emails to his romantic interests
- lied to his best friends about him
- disrupted his relationships with other women and with his friends
Who wouldn't have angry words burning on the tongue after such incidents? By discounting Dr. DeMarte's testimony that Travis's anger was not an abnormal response to the provocation of betrayal and deception, and instead characterizing Travis as "abusive" to Jodi, the jury foreman is telling us that men don't have a right to be angry with women. Or, rather, they don't have a right to be angry with young, slim women with long hair and full lips. And soft voices.
When the final deadlock came, I personally observed three women on the jury crying, jurors #3, #6, and #16. That tells me that these women were less susceptible to the poor little waif persona spun by the defendant. She even tried it on ABC reporter Ryan Owens whom she called "a hater" when he did nothing more than speak plainly to her. Poor little Jodi, all beat up by the abuser from ABC.
The Zervakos comments contrasted with the crying women in the jury box remind me of an interview I once saw with actress Megan Fox, who was preparing to play a villainess in a horror film. Fox talked about choosing to use a soft and appealing voice for the character, a voice she said some little girls first learn to use on their fathers to get out of trouble. The actress felt it was the perfect touch, she said, to make her villain truly terrifying. As Fox pointed out, some things create a sense of protectiveness in men but do not fool other women.
Which isn't to say that they fool all or even most men. If we are to believe the 8-4 split reported, several men on the jury wanted to put Jodi Arias on Death Row. Here I must state that it is not a given that execution is the assumed proper sentence and anything else is a failure. But we are not discussing the death penalty itself right now. What I am focusing on are the statements from the jury foreman that he was "sure" in his mind that Travis "abused" Jodi and that this must be "taken into account" during the sentencing deliberations.
Zervakos discounted more of the testimony of Dr. DeMarte, captured again by Michael Kiefer:
And now Willmott goes on to insulting emails from Alexander. Willmott asks if that's OK. "No, that's not OK," DeMarte says, but not abuse.
— Michael Kiefer (@michaelbkiefer) April 18, 2013
Dr. DeMarte did not characterize Travis's angry outbursts in response to provocation as abuse but Zervakos did. Since Jodi was in no way dependent on Travis financially or legally or for shelter and did not share a child with him, she could have "escaped" this alleged abuse at any time without suffering the slightest consequence. Yet time and again, she did everything in her power to get closer to Travis, even moving to Arizona after their official breakup.
Travis continued to have a sexual relationship with Jodi and kept it private. One could equally say Jodi continued a sexual relationship with Travis and kept it private. Was Elvis abusing the ladies who threw their panties on stage at him? What about the gals lining up for Evel Knievel, Wilt Chamberlain, and Magic Johnson? Groupies may find respect elusive, but where does their own personal responsibility end? If you don't want Andrew Dice Clay coming to your hotel room, don't throw your room key at him.
All women know this. All. All women. Know. This.
Travis told Jodi he would not marry her. He told her their couple-hood had come to an end. What consenting adults choose to do with their libidos after such full disclosure of intent is their own business and hardly exploitative let alone abusive.
Speaking to Vargas on GMA, Zervakos told us that it was his job as a juror to "divest himself from the personal and emotional" but in the same breath he told us the defendant's looks "just didn't wash" in relation to the crime.
The Jodi Arias jurors had a hard job to do, I do not question that. Even if you are comfortable with the death penalty, it doesn't mean you have to give it out for any given crime or even for this particular crime, the brutalization of a young man at his most vulnerable. Twelve people had to figure out what was the right sentence and it would be respectable if they had all agreed to something. There is even dignity in working long hours but finding no agreement.
I just wish Mr. Zervakos had based his mistrial-inducing decision on something better than Jodi's well practiced posturing herself into the small and helpless. We know she's not helpless. We know her wispy bangs crown a cunning mind. We know her pretty eyes mask violent anger. I know that Mr. Zervakos carefully considered the testimony and evidence presented to him, I know he wanted to do the right thing. But his comments to Elizabeth Vargas will live forever.
And I know I won't be the only one wishing he had thought less about how Jodi looked and focused more on how Travis looked after she was done with him.

The comment function there is still working fine. THANK YOU!!!
Would Zervakos think differently if Travis had been his own son? That old fool. He should have looked more closely at the body of Travis instead of Arias's. Surely he understood she was the killer-slaughterer of that poor man. I would have no qualms about voting for death - she more than earned that penalty, and a machine actually performs that sentence to be carried out, not a juror. He, Zerverkos, should have recused himself from that jury during voir doir (sp?). His reasoning just doesn't fly. Yes, I am angry. Could say a lot more could it help, but it can't so I won't. /s a Travis Alexander supporter.
ReplyDeleteawesome article! Totally agree with ^ response!
DeleteI totally agree with you, I couldn't believe he was the Jury Foreman some of his comments made no sense but then again he fell prey to the manipulation of Jodi. I wonder what he thinks of her now after seeing or hearing about the interviews Jodi gave
DeleteHe says he wants to see her! Bizarre!
so, mr zervakos foreman, what does a killer look like to you. maybe some one who might kill one or two or more of your family ?? how in he world would the jury or part of would even elect you as forman. did you take time to look at the travis pics and the family pleas , or are you just a sadist like old missy jodi?? i do believe you are just as sick as that pos. good luck to you living with this on your head. i hope you see travis shadow time and again.
DeleteThere were 85,000 electronic messages between Arias and Travis. Of those ONLY 3-4 were angry ones from Travis. This amount is so negligible that it can in no logical way be described as abusive. Dr. DeMarte said this on the stand as well. Zervakos obviously wasn't listening and likely didn't listen to the jurors who disagreed with him in the jury room either...
DeleteI totally agree. He wasn't listening with an impartial mind like he was suppose to. I believe he has been on the internet and or watcing the news too. He mentioned that she was not treated right by the media. Now, how would he know that? And I asked before after listening to his statements. Who on that jury elected him foreman???!!!
DeleteVery, very well written! Thank you!
DeleteCamille, very good summation. Zervakos is a disgrace.
DeleteAnon@8:27PM, yes!!! A small handful of text messages over such a short duration of time, could he not put two and two together and realize, clearly, something had set this normally calm and rational man off?
DeleteGreat article! I agree with everything except the fact about Jodi's pretty eyes! She has the ugliest, most evil, cold eyes I have ever seen. That is the first thing I noticed about her! The second being how homely she is!
DeleteYour article is so well-written Camille! but I agree with Anon 5:06 AM those eyes! They're reptilian...did you see those explicit pictures? I stumbled upon them and from that day forward I knew I had looked into the eyes of true evil! I refer to the pict. of her lying back propped up on elbow, nude with her braids dangling. The look on her face was so dark, so evil, that it gave me the most eerie feeling: almost as if I was there in that same room feeling that impending danger to Travis. That look revealed her resolve to commit that heinous mortal act. That look showed everything. That picture overshadowed all the others which were much more graphic in nature. That look haunts me...
DeleteExcellent article Camille.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, according to alternate juror #17 Tara Kelley (twitter: @tarakelley320) most of the other jurors are outraged at the foreman's comments and his decision to break their pact not to speak with the media until next week.
Apparently more jurors will be giving interviews beginning Tuesday, according to her.
With regard to the foreman, it's interesting that he defended his position by using very similar verbiage to Jennifer Wilmott's closing argument (regarding how he thought the "trajectory" of Jodi's life changed from a perfectly normal 27 year old woman to something totally different as a result of meeting Travis...which is very similar verbiage to Willmott's argument and totally belied by the facts presented by Juan).
What this shows is that he wasn't using his own reasoning and was using whatever argument he could to avoid admitting that he simply felt sorry for such a helpless and frail looking woman.
As you pointed out, the abusive language Travis used came from a few emails near the end of their relationship after he felt "scammed" by Jodi and was tired of her stalking behavior.....thus it's hard to see how this juror could claim she was "mentally abused" when all breakups have harsh language built into them to some degree, else couples wouldn't breakup if everything was hunky dory.
By the way... Based on his personality I'm comfortable guessing that he was probably the same sympathizer who asked Dr. Demarte the question regarding the "bear and tiger" (that particular question was submitted by a TYPE-A personality who has a higher than normal intelligence level and was a Jodi sympathizer; and the foreman certainly matches those characteristics).
Also, his referencing of Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson is meant to bring Jodi into a better light and is actually not something that a juror is supposed to consider during deliberations, which indicates that he has bonded with her emotionally and is looking to find reasons to spare her life even if they were not part of the jury instructions.
I'd be willing to bet that the other jurors, when interviewed next week, will confirm that they didn't write that bear/tiger question. Juror #17 sat next to the foreman so she can probably confirm what questions he wrote. I know he was probably Mr. Tiger/Bear, LOL.
Yes, she did sit next to him and she was the one who would openly fidget at times. I think she had figured out the whole case long before we got to closing arguments. I've been very interested trying to catch up on all her tweets.
Deletespot on!
Deleteyep the use of trajectory , just not smart a gun a knife and pure evil and mental illness that makes her devoid of feelings thats what changed it
DeleteExcellent response.
DeleteI don't think he came across as intelligent at all. He may have asked the bear question but I doubt if he asked any questions based on his disinterest in the courtroom.
He has a radio show and most likely volunteered to be foreman for the media attention it would draw.
I really think this jury foreman was a "stealth juror" and Also fell for Jodi Ann Arias,s evil ways. Let him meet her. They truly deserve one another, two evils in a pod......:•)
DeleteSuch an insightful article ~ the foreman is as much a media wh**e as the murderer. I personally am still seething over Wilmot's attempt to bloody the hands of the jury if they didn't give her life ~ true, lying isn't a capital offense but murder committed in this manner damn sure is!
DeleteFANTASTIC article! Last sentence sums it up perfectly and brought me to tears. :(
Deleteexcellent read
ReplyDeleteThank you, Anon.
ReplyDeleteGreat article, as usual Camille. I just am amazed that this man thinks Jodi lived a normal life before she met Travis. She left school in 11th grade and moved in with some guy because he parents disciplined her. From there, she lived with 2 more men and then back with her grandparents. Is this normal to Bill Z? Her parents said on tape that she had mental problems, both of them! I just don't think the killer would get more attention than the victim if the genders were reversed in his mind.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention when she lived in a tent with her ex-boyfriend. Her only real ties in her 27 years of free life seem to be with ex-boyfriend's. I can understand maybe having one ex that you stayed somewhat friendly with but, she kept them all hanging around. Maybe so she could use them when she needed things.
DeleteQuite right too. Women know more than men about these things. I don't understand how men are so naive and gullible. Obviously this man has never met someone like the DefendANT.
ReplyDeleteAs a man I am embarrassed to agree that we are naive and gullible. Men are so susceptible to the combo of flirtation and cute even before you mix in BPD. I'm sure Jodi refined her seduction techniques while waitressing and getting instant feedback by $$ tips from how how she treated men.
DeleteOh, Anon 6:05, you make an excellent point about the tips and instant feedback.
DeleteI think you are right about the tips thing while waitressing. Remember someone she worked with said she refused to wait on unattractive men. lol Guess that leaves BZ out! He is most likely going through a midlife crisis and like most men doesn't realize that she would never give him the time of day. She might meet him now if she has heard about his interviews but only to use and further manipulate him if there could be any benifit for her in it..
DeleteHe probably drives a red Corvette convertable like mid-life crisis guys like to do.
DeleteAs far as the murderer of Travis being uncapable of such a crime, SHE DID DO IT!!
Remember 3 words, Mr Z, "Carla Faye Tucker"
WOW Camille! So beautifully written and spot on! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Camille, Thanks for your coverage of Arias trial and insights. I agree totally, "And I know I won't be the only one wishing he (jury foreman) had thought less about how Jodi looked and focused more on how Travis looked after she was done with him."
ReplyDeleteAs brutal as Jodi Arias was, I am still haunted by how inhuman and cold it was for her to leave Travis's body to chill and his blood to slowly pool by the forces of gravity. Abandoning his body to silently decompose for days in his shower stall floor. Unforgivable no matter how cute she may appear.
So true. People who love a person want to take care of them and treat them with tenderness at the final farewell. She deprived all his loved ones of that. And left the little dog to smell every moment of progress in the return of his master to dust.
DeleteThe most glaring example of the foreman's obvious bias and chauvinism is where he calls her a "girl". I'm shocked that the prosecution didn't have him dismissed at voir dire, but perhaps there were no questions aimed at the man's proclivity toward protecting young girls. He's got baggage, and that baggage weighed down an already weary jury, in my humble opinion. His waffling about whether or not it was "fair" to have to decide life or death just shows his ignorance and probable false information provided on the jury questionnaire. The fact that he jumped out in front, did interviews for money, and is very likely misrepresenting his cohorts tells a lot about him, however too late. While I'm please the jury got the conviction correct, I'm disappointed that they were not able to come to a unanimous decision of any sort. I suspect this foreman misinterpreted the jury instructions and made them all think they were doing the right thing, and also preserving their own consciences. He was wrong and he was the leader. I hope Mr. Martinez is paying attention. None of this will help the convict in her next penalty phase. 3 out of 5 of the last DP cases to be retried on the penalty phase in AZ ended in the death penalty. That's pretty fair odds if you think she should be executed. I only wish the Alexander family could have gotten some sort of relief.
ReplyDeleteThose retrial odds are actually better than 3/5. One was not retried as the State made deal, one was rehung so the judge had to give the sentence. The other 3 went to a new jury and ALL 3 ended in DP.
DeleteNurmi referred to JA as "a girl" once when he pointed to her and said "this girl over here."
DeleteLOVED reading your article. I think you were "spot on" as another poster responded. I'm not on Twitter, but I liked reading your Twitter. Very informative.
ReplyDeleteIt's unfortunate that this "juror foreman" missed the mark. I'm wondering what happens when he sees all the interviews that she did and if that makes him wonder..."maybe I should have been more impartial"...or maybe, he shouldn't have been so naive.
AV
no doubt he will if he even cares! Perhaps he has his own agenda from day one!
DeleteI wonder if he's married? If so, did his wife watch EVERYTHING? What does she think? I would be furious with him!! I certainly would have encouraged him NOT to do any interviews!! But, to look at him....I'm sure he's a lot like HODI.....he's gonna do what he wants to do!!
DeleteIf he volunteered to be foreman for media attention, then isn't it possible he voted anti-DP for the same purpose? This case would have gone quietly into the night a lot sooner had they agreed to a sentence. Maybe he did it to keep it alive. I just don't believe that someone that dumb would so easily slip through the cracks of the jury selection process. So maybe he's just yet another master manipulator in this sad saga...
DeleteI love reading your blogs. You are so extremely insightful!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I would add or comment about was why Jodi taped the phone sex. Another twitter person had a suggestion about that and I agree.
Jodi secretly taped the phone sex to blackmail him. She threatened to ruin his life by exposing his sexual fantasies to the church and place of business. She wanted him so badly, she would have done anything to be with him. After sharing the tape with Travis, he emailed or texted the ' ...you are the most evil person I have ever met....you have ruined my life'.
The final encounter with Travis was her last ditch effort to reason with him (with sex) while coming prepared if he didn't change his mind. I believe (and looking at the picture she took of him in the shower staring straight at the camera)he told her to forget it and leave him alone.
What do you think?
@JanisLauria
PS..He also used the words 'betrayed me'.
DeleteThis blackmailing would be the ultimate betrayal.
@JanisLauria
I have believed that for a long time. There's only one reason to tape someone having sex without their knowledge and it ain't for a sentimental keepsake. You are spot on that this tape was a nuclear missile aimed right at the center of Travis's life, his church community. I am less certain but also feel she revealed the existence of the tape to him and that sparked his final and most angry texts to her.
DeleteIf she wanted to blackmail Travis in any way then surely the words would backfire on her as well. She had pushed Ryan to stay within the Mormon fold. If she wanted nothing more to do with Mormons then I can see it wouldn't matter what they thought. However there was no indication that she was planning on quitting PPL, which is full of Mormons.
DeleteAs usual, great article. With regard to the tape, somebody posted a Facebook comment from an individual purporting to be JA's brother claiming that she made the tape(s) to send to Travis' future love interests. I can see the blackmail angle, but for some reason this other explanation makes more sense to me.
DeleteShe only joined to be close to Travis, so she wouldn't care if it reflected on her too. Everything she does is calculated, she set her mind on getting him and nothing was going to stop her. When the sex didn't work any more she killed him. And I agree the tape was what set him off.
DeletePersonally, I would consider sending it to his future love interests blackmail.
DeleteAnon@8:40PM, that's correct. He put it as "so he wouldn't have other girlfriends".
DeleteThank you for your insight.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling that Travis's nasty messages to Jodi were an attempt to run her off. Sort of, "I'll say the nastiest things I can to her and then she'll leave me alone." Instead, I think that's what provided the motivation for Jodi. I think he didn't realize how crazy she is. He could not believe that the soft-spoken woman would really hurt him.
You've hit on a good point there. How often have we heard of men who tried to be a jerk so their gfs would leave and they wouldn't have to be the ones to do the hard work of initiating a breakup? It's actually a sitcom cliche by now.
DeleteAnd no less true for all that. Who knew she was going to go all Glenn Close on him...
DeleteI respectfully disagree Ronni- Travis wouldn't have brought up how betrayed he felt as well as saying she hurt him more than his father dying (paraphrased) No, I believe he realized she was threatening to show the tape to his bishop and probably Prepaid Legal - as well as his circle of friends, the things that meant so much to him. He was so enraged at her, that he gave it to her full force. At this point he was through with her. I also feel that Travis was surprised on 6-4-08, and thinking now she was dangerous. Just look at that picture of her lying nude on the bed in her pigtails. The look in her eyes is murderous. Am I the only one to see it! It is the most telling of all. He thought he could be rid of her tactfully that day before going to Cancun. Then you can see how she captured his total fear and sudden realization in his eyes in that last head-shot of him in the shower. So very compelling. It gives me goose-bumps!
Delete"As I look to find a reason to believe" ~Rod Stewart~ This juror has expressed what many have feared all along. My own husband has expressed he feels sorry for her though I show him those awful autopsy photos time and time again. These men are much like Travis in that there will be no amount of convincing to see otherwise until she heaps so much of her pain on them that they finally concede she is an evil person yet harmless. Travis didn't know until those final immortalized moments. And where was Arias going with that 9mm and knives when she was arrested? About business I suppose. My ratio stands proven 4 out of 12 people could be easily murdered by Jodi Arias. Great read.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for such an insightful look into this juror and his lack of ability to look at who was the real victim here. My god do murders have a distinctive marking, besides being a soft spoken lying devil? I will now teach my great grandson to trust his gut instinct, if it doesn't feel right then it isn't. No more giving anyone the benefit of the doubt, I want my G'grandson to know there is evil in this world and it can come in any form.
ReplyDeleteRIGHT ON POINT!!! EXCELLENT!!
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that they made him the foreman. Would love to hear the "reasoning" behind that. I was on a jury earlier this year and we chose an excellent foreman. Before we chose him we asked "who would like to be foreman"? I suspect this jury did the same thing and this guy immediately jumped up and put his name in the ring. Sometimes a foreman is chosen by who is the most willing. I'm sure most of the other jurors are regretting their decision now.
ReplyDeleteCamille, thank you so much for this excellent article. Perhaps Mr. Z the Jury Foreman should investigate, or at the least, open his computer and his mind to all the info out there about this murderers agenda. She is a danger to society, so Death Row would be the safest place to lodge her for the rest of her life. LWOP is too loose, in my opinion, and may open a door for her to be released sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeletehttp://abcnews.go.com/watch/nightline/SH5584743/VDKA0_a8507n1g/nightline-0522-jodi-arias-jury-cant-agree-on-death-sentence
Starts at 7:41. Ryan Owens: "You could conceivably get out some day. Do you deserve freedom." The Killer: "If you're not abusing me and attacking me and threatening to kill my life, there's no reason to fear."
She NOW has what she believes is a bonafide reason to murder, AGAIN. The Jury Foreman was a willing participant to her demonic sorcery and allowed himself to be sucked into her deranged mind.
The "kill my life" is what stood out to me.
DeleteTravis threatened to expose her in one of the texts. I guess he tried to "kill her life". What a very strange and telling reply.
Wouldn't most people respond that they would never kill again? But her answer to a camping trip is to buy a gun in case things get out of hand.
I hope Juan can point this out next go around.
Janice Raffa, I'm SO glad you caught what this killer said she would do if she ever gets her freedom. There was absolutely NO evidence presented proving any damaging abuse by Travis or witnesses willing to testify in her favor, this murderer admitted she would do it again if she ever gets freedom. She is empowered that she doesn't need evidence to accuse someone of abusing her...there are gullible people in decision-making positions who will believe her lies!! If she gets her freedom...anyone who crosses her path would be in danger!!!
DeleteReally awesome read and so very eloquent. I really don't understand what planet this moron is from. How could he compare her ugly looks to what Travis went through on the last day of his life and actually feel sorry for her.If he is so gung ho about sparing this hoe's life perhaps she should move in with him and put him through what Travis went through on June 4, 2008...I guess I will never understand his thinking and I really do not have the energy to even try. All I will say is that Karma is a bitch and what goes around comes around. Thank you for letting me vent I truly appreciate it. Before I finish I want to send my love and sympathy out to "The Alexander Family" and pray that one day real justice will prevail and this monster will never walk the face of our beautiful earth.
ReplyDeleteReally excellent article!! Didn't I read somewhere that this juror said he wanted to help Jodi Arias? During my 73 yrs, I've encountered more than one woman like Jodi who so easily manipulate men who either don't know they're being manipulated or know it but are so enamored with the soft spoken woman, they don't care as long as they continue getting her attention. If he did say he wanted to help her, I would like to know what he meant.
ReplyDeleteCamille, I didn't know you had a blog :) You write so beautifully. Your insight on all of this was so very interesting. When I woke up that morning and heard Juror #18 was talking, I was so interested in what he had to say, and then the more I listened, I just wanted him to stop talking. I got an odd feeling listening to him.....
ReplyDeleteJulieannn <~~~~ My twitter name too :)
Great article!! Can't wait to hear more from the other Jurors. I think he (Zervakos) scammed them (the jurors). I think it was his idea to not give interviews until next week knowing full well he was going to run out and get that 1st interview. He seems to me to be an attention whore. I am sure we will get confirmation to this next week. Won't he look like a old fool. Not that he doesn't look like one now.
ReplyDelete...another narcissist for sure.
DeleteI agree! I think that Zervakos suggested that nobody would talk until Tuesday. He then took it upon himself to give interviews. At one point in one of the interviews, he started to say My jurors, but, then he stopped himself. I think that he is a pretty self centered man. Just because she doesn't look the part, shouldn't have a thin to do with what she actually did!!! I found the juror to be egotistical. I am shocked at a lot of things that he has been spewing!
DeleteI think JA saw a potentially rich man she could blackmail by threatening to reveal the sex tapes to his Bishop and so on. As often, follow the money. She was a gold digger. I don't know how she thought she would get away with the murder with all the forensic evidence and PHOTOS. Who takes a camera to a murder? In any event, she could have taken the camera disk out and disposed of that instead of putting the camera in the washing machine. That was really intelligent.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I believe she threatened to go to the bishop with the sex recordings to ruin his standing in the church and to ruin his career with her pedophilia fairy tale
DeleteI'm not sure if she put the camera in there intentionally. Some speculate that she deleted the pictures, then threw the camera on the bed or a heap of clothes, and when she put that in the washing machine, she didn't realize the camera was in there as well. If so, she either realized later that it's in there and said "meh, pics are deleted anyway, let's go" or she had a horrific time looking for the camera and not being able to find it anymore, then having to leave because she already was extremely behind schedule.
DeleteI'm not sure if she would put it in there intentionally to get her fingerprints off or damage it. Would be much easier to just dispose of it later together with the murder weapons. A camera in a washing machine is just very ... suspicious. And she obviously had a good plan, with the gas cans, cell phone, rental car etc. I think she even might have had her hair in pigtails that day so she wouldn't shed many hairs while in his house. I also think that she thought about stuff like that before - well, who hasn't? But I can understand that police checked if she might be a serial killer. If she had succeeded, who knows? With her lies, she reminds me of Keyser Söze from "The Usual Suspects", and with her arrogance of one of the murdering students in Hitchcock's "Rope".
Love the reference to "Rope" -- it really rings true. "Usual Suspects," too. But I'm particularly partial to the "Rope" reference. The body's in the trunk, right there during the cocktail party, what a sneaky special feeling for the boys. Yes, Jodi has that quality.
DeleteI think this jury foreman was duped by Jody Arias and I don't see anything attractive about her. This man should have excused himself from the jury when he realized he was biased in his opinion of Arias despite the lies by Arias, evidence, and bloody pictures of Travis slaughtered and nearly decapitated. He needs to crawl back in his hole and stop slandering the victims name. Justice For Travis - from Tennessee

Camille, I really enjoyed reading your comments. One question I have not been able to get an answer to, and I'm not sure you would know the answer to it, but do you know whether someone with Borderline Personality Disorder is able to be "cured" or rehabbed? I thought I read somewhere that there was no treatment for someone with this disorder. If that is the case, then, if she gets life in prison, it should be without parole (JMO). My opinion is that she is a budding serial killer. Every serial killer has a first. When she was arrested she had what the police called a "kill kit" in her rented car (gun and knives). Wonder who was next on her list? The Hughes perhaps?
ReplyDeleteDoris,
DeleteNo cure for a personality disorder. It is your personality. She could receive therapy which may help.Other psychiatrists have said she also has sociopathic traits. She is a mess.
Look up anti-social personality disorder,It's Jodi.
We can't be sure she hadn't killed before Travis and just never got caught. At a minimum, we can be sure "Doggie Boy" met with her wrath. My hunch is there are more victims we will never hear about. I agree that the Hughes were likely her next intended victims.
DeleteI think she would have stabbed Bianca that day she went to confront her. That whole story has kind of gotten lost in all of the other stories of hers in the mire... but that was so telling to me regarding her stalking controlling behavior and her wrath. She is very frightening to me. Thank you so much for your articles. I love reading your work.
DeleteI can only echo the previous replies, nice and beautifully written article. I have been trying to wrap my brain around this man's logic. There is no logic in his statements given the evidence. He is a Jodi supporter. I can only be appreciative that he voted murder one. Her history, shows she had problems with going through her boyfriends emails without permission. There is zero evidence of abuse. Only her word against a man she viciously murdered. When you weigh the number of messages that transpired between Jodi and Travis and then the number that had ill intent. The number are very few. She did something on one occasion that caused him to be very upset. Not even his best friends know what, but it hurt him to his core and he lashed out at her. He must have forgiven her but this one event started her murderous plot. I think it was two days after that her grandparents house was robbed. Man. She sure can fool some people. Master manipulator. That foreman simply does not think with his brain.
ReplyDeleteMaybe she was blackmailing him with the sex tapes...
DeleteHe was thinking with the brain between his legs. I am a female so not so much. I could pull the plug on her easy. Justice for Travis from Missouri....
DeleteThis guy really is disgusting !! He was totally sucked in by the demon JA! He chose to over look her lies and manipulation and even stated that he would like to talk to the evil twisted murderer!! Great job Camille!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your article. I really want to know about the discussion the jury had in the guilt portion of the trial. From the foreman's answers I wonder if he first pushed for 2nd degree murder. His answers seem to convey that Travis Alexander must of done something to make that pretty little thing Jodi Arias kill him and it's not all her fault.
ReplyDeleteCamille, thank you so much for taking your time to share this info with all of us who have made an effort to keep up with this trial and support the Alexander Family in the process.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate you coming here and taking time out of your life to read my thoughts. Thanks for your kind words.
DeleteI am so impressed with your unique insight into what so many of us are now figuring out. Utterly saddened once again for the Alexander Family, but praying and hoping for round 2 with unbiased foreman!! He obviously drank the Jodi Arias kool-aid. Wonder if he were to watch every media interview/others before, during and after, would it change his mind. My guess is probably not which will really confirm what we think. Will look into your books!
ReplyDeleteAwesome article, Camille and 100% accurate, IMO. So sorry Juror 8 was replaced. Apparently, he had a much clearer perspective than #18.
ReplyDeleteThis old man is a complete fool and something in not right with him. I can not believe they picked HIM as the foreperson. He clearly fell for Jodi and her lies and in the end he comes across as vile as she is. William Zervakos, she slaughtered a man and you can call her human? Give me a break. Also, he claims she is not a "Charles Manson." That's right old fool, Manson didn't personally slaughter his victims like Arias did-she's worse. I hope he shuts his trap as he comes across as a bigger fool every time he opens it!
ReplyDeleteYou are SO right...she's worse than Charles Manson because she slaughtered this poor victim herself! This gullible old foreman should have recused himself because as Charlene Davis above so eloquently said, "He obviously drank the Jodi Arias Kool-Aid."!!! This whole penalty hearing was a 3-ring circus!! What does one have to do to qualify for the death penalty? I hope the next jury gets it right!
DeleteI Really think he is a stealth Juror. He is also biased and he didn't follow the instructions. He was supposed follow the law and leave his emotions out of it. He lied when he was being selected saying he was death qualified, he is NOT! And when he said he didn't know he hung the Jury and caused a mistrial, What???? Is he serious?? Did he even read the instructions? I think not!! He should be ashamed of himself.....very ashamed!
DeleteGet a life!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for taking the time and effort to write this blog. I agree that you were spot on. My fear is that the other 11 jurors will not get that they failed in their duty by giving up too soon (perhaps bullied by an ignorant foreman) and in the end did not provide any relief, which was their ONLY obligation, to Travis Alexander and the Alexander family after months and months of hurtful, deceitful testimony. I give up on the foreman - he will never get it.
ReplyDeleteI SAY THAT THIS JURY FOREMAN, WILLIAM "BILL" ZERVAKOS DESERVES WHAT THE PUBLIC THINKS OF HIM NOW. HE WAS TRULY SEXUALLY ATTRACTED TO JODI ARIAS. HE SAT THERE FOR FIVE MONTHS LISTENING TO HIS ANAL SEX LESSONS 2013. HE AND JODI ARIAS CAN HAVE THEIR OWN LITTLE SORDID AFFAIR AND WITH HIM BEING THE NUMBER ONE A-HOLE MEETING UP WITH ANAL-HOLE THEY CAN MAKE UGLE BABIES. HE SOLD OUT THE TRAVIS ALEXANDER FAMILY AND THE PUBLIC. HE KNEW FAR TOO MUCH ABOUT THE TRIAL, WHAT WAS HAPPENING ON THE OUTSIDE. THEN, HE SOLD OUT HIS OWN JURY PEERS. HE HAS BEEN RUMORED TO PROFIT BY DOING THE FIRST INTERVIEW. HE HAS LIED THAT HE COULD GIVE THE DEATH PENALTY, SO HE BROKE THE TAXPAYERS TRUST. HE JUMPED OUT FRONT OF THE OTHER JURY MEMBERS. WHAT ELSE WON'T HE DO? HE IS NO MORE THAN JODI ARIAS AND PROBABLY LESS. HE SHOULD NEVER HOLD HIS HEAD UP PROUD IN LIFE AGAIN.

Well put Mona.
DeleteWatched his interviews and the guy gives me the CREEPS!
DeleteSo very well put, this juror reminds me of LaToilette POS that feels srry for the killer, I hope that was his last and only interview NOBODY wants to hear how How HE thinks JA was justified in cruelly murdering Travis His dumbass needs to stay off the tv
DeleteI know everyone has a right to their opinion but I sorely wish the Foreman would have just kept his mouth shut. He was a Miner bird of Wilmott's and gave us "nothing noteworthy" in his biased assessment. Basically, we should be grateful he even agreed to Murder one. In one breath he says he needed to follow the law when the law couldn't be argued but then when it came to the penalty phase he used sympathy, ignorance and bias. He didn't like Juan. He doesn't like to be made to "feel stupid," as he said. He also wouldn't disclose if he was for death or life because that is private like "voting for the President." Serioulsy?! It seems like this foreman, for feeling so strongly about what he "knows to be true" is at the same time conflicted about his decision. If you are right, if you are confident, if you are human, then you speak your truth and let others make of it what they will. This foreman is sneaky, sketchy and in the end didn't even know that his decision (he was foreman after all) would result in a "mistrial." Well, that comment spoke volumes. He said Jodi was "vilified" in the court of public opinion and that none of us "even knew what went on in that courtroom." He does know this was televised, correct? And he does realize that those of us who do have an "opinion" saw much more than he did, right? Now, not all of us can be wrong, right? I don't know what point he was trying to make. Lastly, let me just say what infuriates me the most is his comment that Jodi doesn't "look like a killer." That pretty much sums up the entire diatribe for me. The foreman, however, does look like the "killer" type to me and that, although just as ignorant, is what pissed me off the most. Has he looked in the mirror lately? How ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great blog,I found it by accident and vry glad I did.
DeleteThis man is a real piece of work. I can't understand how he got on the jury in the first place, but he was probably looking forward to it since day one. I wonder if he has any family or friends who would defend what he has said about this trial. When push comes to shove the jury did JA no favor by not agreeing on the DP as the Perryville Maximin Security Prison where she's headed is a hell hole.
I hope it's ok to post this,it's part of a comment from another blog and gives great insight by someone who has been whee JA is headed.
She will NOT be the Predator..she WILL be the Prey!!! Prison is WAAAY different than that safe little jail she is in now!!! She’s in for a rude awakening!!! And what she said about starting programs and clubs and helping the “illiterate” inmates..NEVER going to happen!!! She’s going to be in COMPLETE isolation for AT LEAST five years, and after she manages to “program down” to a lower classification….she still needs to realize that’s she’s now an INMATE!! The State runs every aspect of your life, so NO she won’t be contributing ANYTHING to society!! The closest she’ll get is a 50 cent an hour job as a GED tutor..but that will take her YEARS and YEARS to get that “privilege”. And her smug, superior attitude she has, all that’s going to get her is beaten up and robbed!! So, it would be in her best interest to just SHUT UP FOR ONCE IN HER LIFE and get OK with the fact that as soon as that gate closes behind her at the “Perryville Complex” sign, nobody cares that she’s Jodi Arias…for the rest of her disgusting life, all anyone will know about her is her INMATE NUMBER!!!”
I think he likes women who enjoy anal sex and that is why he would like to meet with her.
ReplyDeleteJust Say'n.
Excellent article! I am astonished that the foreman would break his pact with the other jurors and speak. Then to say such ridiculous statements. Who voted him foreman anyway? I was on a death penalty sentencing case in NC 18 years ago and it was tough. Easy to say you would do it and then actually doing it. Our jury had forms that guided us through the process and the decision was clear from the questions on the forms and how we all answered them. Aggravated circumstances have a HUGE factor, not the sex of the defendant, weight or voice tone. Look at the victim! Not sure why the defendant was looked at so closely. This was not a insanity plea! Confused and disappointed once again by our legal system.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your Blog. I really think there's more to Bill than we know, and I hope it comes out. Why would Bill open a FB account in April?? Wouldn't that be putting him close into temptation to see how the World and medias reaction to Jodi?? I hope this is investigated and Mr.Bill is made an example to the courts of law that not abyding by the law there is serious concequences
ReplyDeleteI read on another support page that he co-host a radio show.
DeleteI felt the same way until someone pointed out to me that should they find he didn't follow his juror vows and it was proven he didn't, would open the door to possibly a mistrial. I sincerely hope this man pays day in and day out for the unjust way he treated the court, the tax payers of AZ, his comrades but mostly knowing and seeing those horrible autopsy photos of Travis. Justice will be served and I hope that this next jury sees the evidence as the four that threw this trial out of balance evidently didn't. Bless the Alexander family and may they finally find the peace that they so rightfully deserve.
DeleteWilliam Zervakos is a total disgrace. Too old and senile to have been on this jury. Honestly the man comes across as a total pervert enamored with this murderer. Hope is life is sheer hell from this point forward. Maybe he can move to Florida and befriend the moronic Casey Anthony jurors.
ReplyDeleteWe don't need anymore like him here!!! YOU keep him!!! LOL!!
DeleteFrom Florida
I wonder whether he was influenced by viewing her naked photographs and whether he enjoyed secret fantasies during her 18 days on the stand during which she described in detail her endless sexual experiences. Has he not expressed in his interview his desire to visit Arias in prison?
ReplyDeleteHow offensive he is. And how ignorant that he doesn't recognize what a buffoon he has made of himself through sharing his outrageous views. How tragic for the family and friends of Travis and for such devoted and hard-working advocates such as Juan Martinez, Detective Flores and the other jurors and so many, many others who worked tirelessly.

ReplyDeleteCheers, and thank you for your great article as usual, Camille.
Thanks! Great tip!
DeleteThis article was right on! I am sorry #17 wasn't part of the final vote along with #8. I wonder how this guy managed to be picked as the Jury Foreman. I look forward to hearing from the other jurors and hope for a better outcome with the next jury pool. Keeping the Alexander's in my prayers as this goes forward in the "Halls of Justice".
ReplyDeleteCamille,
ReplyDeleteExcellent evaluation.I was shocked by some of his remarks. He also stated that the jury had made a pact in the beginning not to try to change each others minds.Isn't that part of the process? Talking it out while looking at all the evidence and mitigating factors?
I believe this jury was burned out and some were unable to send a "girl" to death row no matter what she did. With 8 men on the jury is was going to be very hard
for them. No doubt in my mind that if Jodi was unattractive, a woman of color, and did not have the ability to lie with such ease, she would have ended up on death row.
I thought that was an odd comment he made too Chris. Why would they make a pact not to change each other's minds? That what the deliberations are for! If not, then why bother having them? Just take a vote and say we're done. It was obviously his idea to have that pact.
DeleteCamille, You put into words what the large majority of people following this trial have been feeling. I also would like to share something with anyone who has never had an experience with a borderline personality. I loved someone who was a borderline. To say they are very good at 'mirroring' people is a grand understatement. It is how they pull you in. They are superb at flattering and ingratiating themselves into others lives. When you anger them, and the smallest sign of even a perceived rejection, will infuriate them like nothing I have ever seen, their rage is beyond terrifying. It is at that point in my relationship I tried to distance myself, as did Travis with Jodi. The problem is, the more you try to distance yourself, the angrier they become, and their anger knows no bounds! They will begin inflicting such devastation and destruction in your life, that you will attempt anything to make them understand they need to just STOP and leave you alone. It is then that you become afraid, and also angry that nothing you could of foreseen could of prepared you for the havoc they are inflicting on you. Nothing that your past relationships have taught you in the past, seem to apply to a relationship with a borderline. As they spin of control, so does your life and any hopes of it ever ending. I am not an abusive person in any way, neither physically, verbally, or emotionally. Yet, in a desperate attempt to make this borderline personality stop attacking me; my friends; my job, my life, I found myself lashing out at them verbally in a way I had never talked to another person in my 55 years! I naively hoped that if I stood up to them, and got down to their level-maybe, just maybe, they would finally leave me alone. I was wrong. I believe that is why we see glimpses of such uncharacteristic behavior in some of Travis' texts. He was trying anything and everything to make her go away! To just leave him alone! He too hoped a show of righteous anger would finally scare her and make her just leave him alone. Ironically, my borderline also secretly taped me. Engaging and coaxing me into conversations they kept on tape in case they needed ammunition against me in the future. They also hacked into my accounts; secretly gathered numbers off of my phone, and prepared themselves for an upcoming slander attack against me, all while they were declaring I meant the world to them. That they loved me like no other. I can't begin to describe how horrifying it was. Unlike my borderline, Jodi also is clearly a sociopath. Making her doubly dangerous to anyone who crossed her. Poor Travis was out of his depths with Jodi. Travis was no more abusive, then am I. He was simply drowning in a relationship he had no way of escaping.
ReplyDeleteWhat a chilling story you have told us here. So many direct parallels to what went on between Travis and Jodi. Thanks for sharing these details with us.
DeleteThank you for sharing your experience.
DeleteYes!! I had that experience as well! I dated a creep, but only for about 6 wks before his mental illness was recognizable. The more I tried to get away from him, the more he would stalk me and the angrier he would get. I wouldn't engage him or react to his craziness. But being on the receiving end of his harassment a year and a half after I told him in no uncertain terms to leave me alone, I finally shouted at him in front of other people, "It's really pathetic how desperate you are for my attention...Insane!!" And that actually got rid of him!! He was actually humiliated enough to finally leave me alone!! But he had been scaring me...he was mentally abusive and insulting, and chaotic. I'm lucky he didn't do me in like a Jodi Arias!! Those people are CRAZY!
DeleteIt is really touching and horrifying to read about your experience with a person having borderline personality disorder. You write that "To say they are very good at 'mirroring' people is a grand understatement". Sounds exactly like Jodi Arias' innate emptiness, lack of self-satisfaction, and copying of other people, in the way they do their hair, their demeanor, and everything else. All the other characteristics are also the same such as manipulation, stalking, unwillingness to let go, persistent pursuit and destructive and damaging tendencies while declaring her love for Travis who was her "whole world". Everything is so very similar to Travis' misfortune, thankfully your horrific experience came to an end.
DeleteCan you answer a question for me about the jury instructions? This juror said he didn't know there would be a mistrial of the sentencing phase if they couldn't reach a unanimous decision. I read jury instructions online and it clearly states that at the end but I'm not clear if that section was given to the jurors or not.
ReplyDeleteThe jurors had the entire instruction.
DeleteWell, that speaks volumes about how much this juror was paying attention.
DeleteSomeone on another blog I read has brought this up and said he thought the mistrial was going to be for the whole trial. He figured being hung would null the guilty verdict and didn't realize it was for the sentencing phase only.
Deletewhen everyone would stand for the jurors to leave, I saw Jodi a few times move so she could look at a juror on the end closest to Det Flores and smile. It looked like she was flirting with a juror and now I know. She was indeed eyeing the juror and smiling.
ReplyDeleteI agree I saw it too and mentioned it to Nancy Grace
DeleteWhat stands out to me is what this Foreman said was his reaction to Jodi Arias when he first saw her. (He said when he walked into the courtroom the first time & looked at who the defendant was. It was hard to put that into prospective when you look at a young woman. And think of the crime & then you see the brutality of the crime. It just doesn't wash so its very difficult to divest yourself from the personal.) Now I don't want to get picky but the first time he would have seen Ms. Arias would have been during jury selection. I have been a jurier before & the defendant is setting in court during jury selection. So what his statement meant to me is he made up his mind & was sympathetic to her before the trial even started. Yes I know all 12 voted for murder 1 which included this foreman. But his statement is very unsettling. Because he didn't see her the 1st time on Jan 4th when the trial started. He had seen her several days during jury selection.
ReplyDeleteWhat a depressing detail you highlight. :( Thanks for sharing your experience and your brief and very accurate transcript with us.
DeleteGreat comment, maybe he believed if he helped hang the jury she would get off,or a new trial. He may not have understood the jury instructions about the jury being hung only applied to the penalty phase. I wonder how he feels now about his vote to convict?
DeleteI've always heard tell beware of the quiet ones. Her demeanor suggests innocence but what does a killer really look or sound like? Just because she is a slight, quiet woman does not mean she was incapable of murder, that she didn't have an evil heart filled with hatred for a man that had it all, who was unwilling to share his life with her-wanting an equal and like partner..so she took it. Therefore if she couldn't have what she wanted, spoiled mistreated girl that she was, threw a tantrum fueled by the emptiness of her soul. That gaping neck wound should have left no question as to who was abused. I don't know of a soul that doesn't have a few mean words for someone who has done them wrong. As far as his double life, I believe he wanted to be what the church and others thought of him but he was a normal man with desires. I think Dr Demarte, despite her youth and so called inexperience, was very knowledgeable and had Jodi's number. I was disappointed with the lack of a verdict. I cannot fathom why after seeing those photos and her lack of injury that anyone could think she deserved a chance. Or after seeing the pain every day and hearing the impact of Travis' loss had on his siblings. He had much to show for his life, materialistic, professionally, friendships, admiration..what did she have... past lovers...I think that speaks volumes.
ReplyDeleteGreat comment and your last sentence is so keen.
Deletewhere was jodi going with the 9mm and those 2knives hidden in a book or box inside another rental car?
ReplyDeletethis should have been brought out in trial.
yes its prejuducial but its important for a jury to get the full picture.
maybe criminals would think twice about committing a crime if all of their behavior and actions were brought out.
NEVER BELIEVED TRAVIS' RELIGION OR THE SEX TALK OR SEX PHOTOS WAS RELEVANT.
THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MURDER
That's what Jodi didn't get. Everyone in the world - including devout Mormons - understands sex happens. People get over sex. People don't get over slaughter.
DeleteThis is a great article and one thing I think he forgot is Travis first thirty years not one thing that he was abuser he climbed from a bad situation to live a prosperous happy life successful and very loved by everyone that knew him he had no problems before Jodi..... Guess he didn't think about that at all
ReplyDeleteWhat bothers me most is the fact that he uses the word "abuse". As a domestic violence counselor we work hard to teach people the difference between angry words used in frustration and abusive language used to control. She was NOT an abuse victim. She was an instigator who manipulate to get a reaction then act victimized. Her smile when Nurmi said he didn't like her was proof of this tactic.
ReplyDeleteI pray thenAlexander family finds some semblance of peace.
Thank you for this wonderful article and you have made a fan out of me.
This is a great comment with wonderful insight. Love the professional angle. Thanks for sharing it with us. And thank you for your kind words, too.
DeleteThats the same juror that Jodi tripped over Willmont at the ending of trial everyday to watc, he must have given her reason for it
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is why Arias said she was betrayed by the jury. She thought she would not get Murder 1 because of this eye contact she was having with one of the jurors.
DeleteSpooky thought. :( For what it's worth, I never saw him or any juror making googly eyes toward her. But as I tried to make clear in the top of the essay, the courtroom is very large and we in the back of the gallery especially (where the media was required to sit) are miles away from the faces of the players.
DeleteHe was makingeye contact waith Jodi and thats not right for a juror
ReplyDeleteJuror Z. is just a horny old man who loved fantasizing to the killer's never-ending tales of kinky sex. I don't think he even heard a single word of the rest of the trial. He and Nurmi are two peas in a pod, and that's what they were counting on when they selected several older men for this "jury of peers."
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone here! Awesome writing Camile, thankyou!!
ReplyDeleteExcellent article. I wish the jury could have known all the things we learned about Hodi. I am so sick of things being considered "prejudicial" to defendants. As long as something is demonstrated to be the truth, it should be allowed. Hodi was allowed to trash Travis to her heart's content. The court didn't care that it was prejudicial for Travis.
ReplyDeletethink this guuy got a thrill of hearing about Jodis 3 hole wonder and wanted to stand in line
ReplyDeleteExcellent article. There is so much wrong and bias about this juror. He had his mind made up when he walked in and saw he and said just by her appearance "things didn't add up". He also said he had to put his emotions aside with Jodi, but was put off by Juan and felt like he talked down to him. So being lied to under oath you can be partial to, but not how aggressive the prosecutor is????
ReplyDeleteGreat point. He has been doing a little too much talking. He's sounding manipulated and somewhat manipulating. He was clearly willing to represent himself as being open to the DP during voir dire. He charmed the jury into his position as foreman, then became a major player in ignorance as to his role in the penalty phase? An unbiased foreman may have been able to assist the other three jurors in the law. He is looking very bad right now.
DeleteThank You ForPosting Your Insite Being There.....Very Good Article.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the correlation to Charles Manson. He got the death penalty (later changed to life) and he didn't even kill Sharon Tate and the LaBiancas. He had 3 women and a man go to the house. The women are the ones who stabbed them and wrote words on the walls in their blood. JodI Arias did it herself and in a horrible way. She is just as bad if not worse than Charles Manson. At least the Manson family had Acid/LSD use as an excuse to being out of their minds. I've seen no evidence that Jodi Arias was on drugs. She was simply a psychopath.
ReplyDeleteAny research on borderline personality disorder shows that outside factors don't cause it. Research shows that often their perceived "bad childhood" doesn't cause BPD but because they have BPD they perceive the childhood as being bad. They hate rejection, are prone to rage, and have problems with their emotions, and at times instead of being diagnosed as BPD it is misdiagnosed as PTSD. The reason being they THINK they've had a traumatic thing happen when in actuality it was not. Such as Jodi saying that Travis would get angry at her for things but failing to mention that those things included her stalking him, slashing his tires, and bothering his friends and female friends. But having BPD doesn't mean you have no memory or that you dont know killing is wrong.
She remembers what happened but she won't say so now. She knew she killed him. She knew she covered it up. She described indetail what happened in her story about other people doing it and her running, just listen to it replacing what she said the guy and girl did with Jodi. She flew into a rage and butchered him proba. It seems to have only taken minutes. Realizing what had happened she may have thought of suicide but changed her mind, deleted pics, stashed the body, washed the sheets and camera and left! When she says she "woke up" in the desert and saw blood on herself, it sounds like she was lost in thought about it, trying to figure out what her story would be.
I went into researching this with an open mind, not knowing the details. I watched all the videos of her on television lying, her interrogations, her on the stand, autopsy pics, crime scene pics, other evidence and The State proved its case. Her not telling the truth on the stand or in her plea for life is another reason she should have been sentenced to death. In her mind she doesn't "feel" she's really done anything wrong. Those kinds of people dont deserve parole, you cannot rehabilitate them. There is no cure for BPD and its not an excuse to kill people who you think have made you mad. Thats abnormal and she is definitely abnormal. She has always been this way based on what all is known. The idea that she was a normal woman before meeting Travis is absurd and completely untrue.
-jodi jones, ms
Awesome comments here, Jodi Jones!! I thought as well...isn't perjury a crime in and of itself?? And she admittedly perjured herself numerous times "under penalty of perjury". Why did that seemingly go unnoticed and unpunished by the judge??
Deletepoint blank--- i watched the whole thing from start to sick ending, she shhould have been given death simple! now she still gets feed after her 2 million dollar case that was free again to her! and all the videos she did?? why is she diff then all other guilty killers getting to wear her civilion shirts? she was found guilty and not have to wear her stripped shirt? im sick,
ReplyDeleteI don't find those text messages abusive at all. He was just telling her how he felt. Did he call her names??? So what if he said she was the worst thing that ever happened to him. Is that an abusive statement??
ReplyDeleteWhat it is was a statement of pure fact. The photos the Medical Examiner took could be labeled with that one single text.
DeleteMichelle, I found the same and I've watched hours and hours of testimony. I couldn't see anything abusive by his texts. And Dr. D dispelled that notion with her testimony which was believable to me. It just didn't make sense that the defence was trying to make Travis sound like an abuser because these texts did in no way show abuse. And to be quite honest I wouldnt have even needed to hear Dr. D's testimony to come to that observation. The texts speak for themselves.
DeleteCamille, bravo for a brilliant analysis! It's very distressing that some people still fall for that soft-voice routine. I've only encountered it a few times, but in each instance, I've determined that it was a manipulative, seductive technique and demanded that the speaker repeat themselves, as many times as necessary for them to raise the volume. It's interesting how quickly a woman will comply when challenged by another woman. But what I found most distressing about Zervakos' remarks was his leadership role in diffusing any hard-nosed debate and challenging each other's conclusions. As foreman, he had an obligation to encourage everyone to clearly articulate, and defend if need be, their reasoning process. It makes me wonder if the remarks he's made to the media were ones he made to his fellow jurors, or if he concealed his outdated, sexist beliefs. I suspect that if sufficiently challenged, he would have to reveal other biases and/or prejudices against Travis Alexander, that led him to his flawed conclusions about abuse. Unfortunately, there's no one left to challenge him.
ReplyDeleteAnd bravo to you for challenging that seductive voice routine when you find it in real life. I loved reading that.
DeleteWhat a great article. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you for and interesting and informative article, your observations of the jury help to put into perspective the remarks of the Jury Foreman. There is so much information about his interviews and the negative emotional responses directed toward him , we need to hear from someone who had been there to observe him in the court. As disappointing as his remarks have been and the hung jury resulting in a mistrial, the jury system is proving that it is working. People on the jury are not puppets of the court, the state or the defence. They have to follow the law and the instructions that include that they are directed to find an unanimous decision but not at violence to someones honestly held opinion. He was not the only one to hold out from the majority vote, so others held to their belief as well. They did the right thing by telling the Judge they could not make an unanimous decision. The system will move along, and justice will prevail for Travis Alexander with Death Or LIfe in prison. One more comment, you are right "All women know this. All. All women. Know. This." Jodi Arias on 48 hours interview revealed her true self in 5 minutes, to me and any other women watching. Thank you again.
ReplyDeleteYou said a mouthful there, "in 5 minutes, to every woman watching." So true. Thanks for taking the time to read and to share your thoughts. I really appreciate it.
DeleteAbsolutely most informative article of this case. She manipulated others her whole life and it looks like she will continue. I TRULY believe the last argument between Travis and the manipulator was about the tape. She threatened to make it public. He didn't know she taped it. I do believe in karma and she will one day pay for her abuse of Travis dead and alive.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your suspicion about the tape and the last argument. Thank you for your generous words and for sharing your thoughts here.
DeleteHi Camille,
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved the article. The more the foreman speaks, the more frustrated and confused I become.
I wanted to get your take on this whole gender thing though. Personally, I've always thought it was a major advantage that there were more men on the jury than women. I assumed that men would be able to see through the lies and manipulation, that they've probably dealt with a girl somewhat like Jodi in their past, and that they can see through the facade in a second. On the other hand, women seem to be more sympathetic to her. Some women can "relate" to her "stories of abuse." I just find it rather odd because it's obvious that this guy was not for the death penalty for her, and I honestly assumed the holdouts would've been mostly women.
I'm surrounded by men. I'm the only girl in my family, I have 4 brothers and my dad lives 5 minutes away. I also have a husband and a 2 year old little boy. But my point is this, every single man I know hates her guts and wants her to die. They can't even stand looking at her or listening to anything she says. She makes my dad physically ill and he would've given her the death penalty in 5 minutes.
So, I was just wanting your opinion and insight on the whole gender thing.
This is a very interesting comment, thanks for sharing about the men in your life and their reaction to Jodi. I did think that the men on the jury might be able to relate to Travis's predicament. But this is exactly why when I'm being interviewed on TV, I always tell them "I don't predict juries."
DeleteRight, one can never predict what a jury is going to do and that has definitely been proven with this trial...
DeleteIt seems to me that the majority of her wacked out supporters are women who have been in abusive situations and for whatever reason, believe her nonsense. I've been debating the gender aspect with several people for awhile now, and I've seen numerous remarks since the beginning of this trial from people that pointed out their concerns about the jury having more men, and I often disagreed. I honestly thought that the men would not be affected by her youth or aesthetics. I thought they would look at the crime objectively and not be influenced by the gender of the defendant. It appears I may have been foolish in thinking this way given the recent statements by the foreman.
I'm certain that if a man had killed a woman in this fashion, they would not have been struggling with the decision of life or death so much. Nor would he have been able to get up on the stand and say, "well, she called me names, so I stabbed her 30 times and damn near cut her head off, gee what's the big deal?"
I think the double standard in this country is sickening. We're all human beings and regardless of who kills who, the punishment should be equal.
Here's my thought.....what if they all start talking and the DUH-fense finds something to appeal because of their comments? Something from the Guilty Phase?
ReplyDeleteThat's been concerning me also Anon. Nurmi clearly keeps himself in the loop when it comes to media coverage because he was aware of the picture taking incident with Juan. Since the trial isn't over, it only takes one wrong comment from a juror.
DeleteGreat article. I also noticed that this foreman said that he wasn't going to look at Jodi when the verdict was read and that he did end up looking at her and he said something about the look on her face. I can't remember exactly what he said but I am damn sure the look on her face could not compare to the look of Travis' face lying in the shower. I don't know if Jodi deserves death or not but if I simply look at the aggravators versus the mitigators there is only one clear choice. I can only assume some sympathy or bias or whatever you want to call it came into play. Apparently one of the alternates, #17, is speaking out as well and Jodi's supporters are taking screen cap pictures of her facebook and twitter and sending them to Wilmott. Would this make any difference in this case as she was not in deliberations?
ReplyDeleteDepends on what she says. If she says that during the guilt phase she was bringing newspapers in every day for her fellow jurors and conveying messages from Nancy Grace by passing notes in the jury box, it certainly could be very useful to the defense. If she says, however, that she is disappointed in the mistrial I don't see how it could be relevant to the appeals process.
DeleteThank you Camille. Your coverage and writing are outstanding.
ReplyDeleteI think Juan Martinez should have been screaming objection and bouncing around like the energizer bunny at Willmott's antics to begin her closing. The moment she said directly to the jury are you going to kill her should have been interrupted immediately. The jury is not charged with personally wielding a knife, stabbing it 29 times, then slitting it's throat, and then shooting it in it's miserable head for good measure. The jury is charged with sentencing a convicted murderer based on the citeria. That is it. Her remarks were so prejudicial it was not even funny.
ReplyDeleteI Hope Bill has read all the evidence we have seen that was withheld from the jury, and watched it's interviews over the last couple weeks, and feels like a total ass for being sucked into hodi-land.
For some reason I feel this juror/foreman purposely had his penalty phase verdict decided very early in the trial. And I feel it is from his knowledge that he would get and make sure he had a first interview with media, and making money from this trial. Look at this guys background, he is very familiar with media. How this person, Zervakos could come up with a verdict of pre-meditated murder, and not come back with a penalty of death is beyond me, especially to the gruesome death of Travis. It just doesn't make any sense to me, as well as the other 3 jurors.
DeleteSorry, meant to say, as well as the other 8 jurors.
DeleteThank you for this article Camille, very well written and great observations during the trial. I can't help but notice and wonder about this juror how Jodi Arias was probably close to something personal within his life. He didn't serve his unbiased duty as a juror, let alone a jury foreman. It's obvious by his interviews that he was very biased about killer Jodi Arias and his comments. Seems like he is trying to make some money out of this situation. It especially troubles me to hear how he was showing his bias by nodding in agreement with testimony by a certain witness. How much more obvious can you seem to courtroom onlookers? I'm also concerned as to how or if he managed to change 3 more jurors decisions. I watched everyone of Dr. Demante's youtube testimonies and how anyone couldn't realize that this Dr. was extremely smart and knowledgable is beyond me. And I also watched all the testimony from Laviolette and Samuels to which Juan made them look like half cocked idiots. So for this jury foreman to believe the words that Jodi Arias was abused by Travis is just the most ultimate insult to human kind.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone about the forman's blatant sexual bias. There were other things he said that I don't understand either. He said that the he and his fellow jurors did not understand the instructions for the penalty phase. But the judge very clearly told them to ask questions if they needed clarification on anything. As someone has already mentioned, he said they were shocked when the judge declared a mistrial for that phase. Is he just making excuses for himself now? He even said that he would like to talk with Jodi at some point and ask her what really happened that day. Why would he think she would tell him?
ReplyDeleteThe scariest thought for me is that there is nothing to keep a like minded person off the next jury. How could they weed someone like this out?
The whole thing is so heartbreaking. I am hoping the Alexanders will ask the state to except a plea for life wirhout parole. As long as this process goes on, she will continue to torture that innocent family. Take that source of joy away from her as soon as possible.
Here's a qoute from the foreman to abc15.com:
ReplyDelete"Juror 18, foreman Bill Zervakos, explained how, in the end, the trial for Arias ended up with a hung jury when deciding on life in prison or death.
"None of us knew what would happen if we were unable to come up with a verdict," Zervakos admitted.
Zervakos told ABC15 the jury believed Stephens would decide whether to give Arias life in prison or life with chance of release.
According to Zervakos, the jury believed their instructions were ambiguous and they had no idea the judge would declare a mistrial."
Me: Holy Mother of God!

By the way, I love your blog. Thank you for your thoughtful insights.
ReplyDeleteI love your viewpoint Camille. And You're completely right, Anon. She didn't live a normal life with dropping out of high school, kicking her mother, growing pot on her rooftop, her mother saying people called her to tell her something was mentally wrong with Jodi(Im sure there was way more stuff she was doing to her parents than what was revealed, but I think her mom was a "Cindy Anthony", she'll hide the full story to protect her daughter). However, its not intuitive to say Travis stirred something evil, maybe obsession, within her. It was stated that with one guy, she was in financial trouble b/c neither of them had jobs and they were living together to make ends meet. The other one had a kid. So Im thinking, these men weren't appealing to her. Travis had wealth, admiration by all his friends, he owned a home, had a successful career. This was the perfect man for her, and she couldn't let him go.
ReplyDeleteThe worst comment he made in my mind was the.. "this girl was crusified in the court of public opinion" that made my blood boil! What about Travis Victor Alexander? She premeditated his brutal murder and then crucified him.. re-victimized him! She is an awful person. It disgusts me! Whatadouche. Thankfully he convicted her!
ReplyDeleteJodi Arias came from a humble background, and immediately leeched on to a successful, charismatic young man, who kept company with other successful people who had evening gowns to lend, preferential seating at company events with luxury accommodations at company funded exotic travel spots and who had an infinitely bright future. She fell fast and she fell hard, almost immediately breaking up with her current love upon returning from this convention.
ReplyDeleteWe have all met a "Jodi Arias" in our lives. The inject themselves into your world fast and furious, but not obviously. Before you realize it, they are considering you their best friend, or in this case, your girlfriend, and someone where in Arias' tortured mind, even a fiance.
Though they had never met him, her parents were under the impression they were going to marry. (Per her father's police interview). And this was nine months after their break up.
People like Arias don't take well to rejection, on any level. As mentioned above, they force themselves into your life, little by little, step by step, believing all along that you welcome their unsolicited phone calls, visits to your home or work, their inappropriate invitations and desire to be best friends or love interest. (Remember, several of his friends said she would invite herself to functions where she was not invited, nor would be able to attend if it weren't for being with him. Others said she would invite herself on trips and outings as well.)
I don't think he fully understood the depth of her depravity , and eventual obsession, until she tried to blackmail her way into the Cancun trip. The forethought and planning that manifested in the form of a well set-up phone conversation where by, she managed to get him to utter those words about a twelve year old girl. It was blatantly apparent that she had him repeat this to ensure it was clear, and she knew exactly what she was going to do with it. Thus, in Travis' words, "her betrayal" amongst several other angry comments, that any of us would spew upon realizing that someone had done something as low-handed as this.
He was done, he'd had enough. Personally I think he had tried to let her down gently many, many times. But this last stunt broke the camels back. It was far worse than the stalking behavior he had experienced in the nine months prior, he was at his breaking point.
And she knew it.
She knew it, and she was having none of it.
The day of those last text messages where he made it clear he considered her a sociopath, and he was going to expose her for what she really was, was only two days before the mysterious burglary of the gun at her grandparents....and the rest is history.
She wanted so desperately to be included in the Cancun trip that she launched one of the most diabolical, premeditated crimes I have ever heard about. She went to him one last time, when she realized he had intentions of taking someone else on this trip, and after crawling into and out of his bed trying unsuccessfully to change his mind, she made sure he would never tell her no about anything ever again.
And she continues to punish him to this day.
good one, my same thoughts. for a juror not to see this for what is was is disgusting. she thought she hit a gold mine. travis was the first guy she couldn't control.he was done. he just wanted her to go away. she is evil, and evil comes in all colors, shapes and forms. big mistake for the foreman to say she didn't look like a killer.
DeleteAccurate analysis. Everything is clear as daylight to everyone, starting from Travis' friends to all of us watching this case. But the Jury Foreman chose to be deceived, and wanted to wear his blinkers throughout, how unfortunate of him to support this wicked witch in the guise of a "normal girl".
DeleteThank you for a terrific article. Like most others, I am terribly disappointed with the lack of a final verdict in this case, and dread what Jodi and company might pull during the next penalty trial. I am curious about all the interviews Jodi did - can they be used by the prosecution next time around? I noticed during one interview that Jodi was asked what Travis' last words to her were. She said something like "nothing specific, just idle chit chat". The reporter than asked, "So it went from idle chit chat to Travis suddenly lunging out of the shower at you?" And Jodi replied "Oh no - it wasn't sudden. It had been building, it built over time." This directly contradicts what she said on the witness stand...
ReplyDeleteI would also like to say that I think Jodi has some BPD issues, some definite narcissistic issues - but I believe she is a sociopath - and a very dangerous one at that. I think that is how she seduced the jury foreman into taking off his common sense and climbing aboard her crazy train.
I caught that too Anon. She said it took "minutes" for his anger to build. Of course, we all knew it was a lie from the get go but it's just amusing to see her outwardly contradict herself.
DeleteI agree that Arias' seduction of the jury foreman into sympathising with her, really confirms her dangerousness and well-honed manipulative skills. SHE IS UNBELIEVABLY DANGEROUS, but MOST people not involved with her CAN see through her guise of victimised nice person. Thank heavens that the jury foreman did support the first degree premeditated murder verdict, along with the other jurors. Otherwise, he is a totally wrong choice as jury foreman and leader of the team. His agenda may be to make money out of this trial, through book deals, interviews, and other means.
DeleteI'm sorry I hit publish too quickly. I also believe that this jury foreman bought it all hook line and sinker. And for all the reasons you describe.
ReplyDeleteMy fear is, not only did he believe what she said, but that perhaps he misrepresented the jury instructions to ensure a mistrial in her favor. Just a thought.
After all, LIFE was clearly a choice that could have been agreed to, right there on the verdict form. So his ARGUMENT doesn't "wash" in my opinion.
Fascinating and I got some of the answers I was google searching for. I am a bit disgusted at some of the nastiest comments about this jury foreman though. I was trying to understand how he could believe she was emotionally and verbally abused. I read the text messages and I independantly wondered if Travis was responding to blackmail. It was interesting that so many others think the same thing. It didn't occur to me that it could be the sex tape. Was Jodi ever asked what he was angry about? Not that she would have told the truth... I don't agree with the foreman but I don't think he's such an awful man like the other posters. I was curious why he thought she was abused though. I think the nastiness in those texts could easily be precipitated by a threat to expose their relationship and I don't think that's abuse.
ReplyDeleteI think Jodi claimed something about Travis being angry with her because he had promised her he was going to get some help for his "pedophilia" and didn't. She confronted him about it and she claims the "betrayal" he's referring to is her insistence that, since he didn't get help, she was going to have to do something.
DeleteThis claim from Jodi does not make sense. No where in that text argument does Jodi answer Travis by saying all I want is for you to get help; there is no need to call me names.
DeleteI thought the same thing about them using the same words , when they both say "trajectory of her life" I knew then that he was thinking about JW closing & her cheap power-point.
ReplyDeleteI have 2 comments. First off - I will always believe Jodi tricked Travis into unknowingly making that sex tape - asking him to say the raunchiest stuff he could think of that- and that she then exposed the tape and threatened him with it. Secondly - I also think she is a sociopath. I have had my own horrible experience with a sociopath and there was a characteristic he exhibited which I found to be very chilling. He did not seem capable of genuine or spontaneous emotional responses. Instead he relied on a handful of ill-suited stock phrases he must have borrowed from others. Jodi reminded me of him the way she repetitively said "He spun me around" or or"he body slammed or me" when describing supposed episodes of painful and scary abuse. NO real feeling - just a hollow mimicry.
ReplyDeleteThat tape seemed to be scripted and put together versus phone sex. She was already planning her
Deleterevenge when she made it. No other recorded conversations I know of (maybe there were and just didn't make it into the trial). I don't think I have known any sociopaths but my heart goes out to you. Millions of people now know to avoid this type of person at all costs. We have the trial to thank for educating us.
I think there are/have been much more recorded conversations, if not all of them. And I also believe that she treated them the same as the photos: delete if they didn't seem to serve the purpose.
DeleteJodi lies so much. She said when she got to the desert she noticed her hands had blood on them. If that was true all the door knobs in Travis's house would have blood on them when she left. I believe she was nude when she killed him and then washed off in the shower. Evil Monster
ReplyDeleteThe reason, I believe, women hate her more, is because we see right through her BS. We've all either had girlfriends who at some point have been desperately obsessed with a guy, or we've found ourselves in a similar situation. But I seriously don't know any woman who in her late 20s - as I am - would be so utterly oblivious to the ways men operate when it comes to the matters of heart. Maybe in the teenage years or early 20s, but not when you're 27-28 which is her ~age at the time of murder. I agree with Dr DeMarte that she's somewhat immature in her psyche. Only an immature woman would think that by constantly doing favors for a guy or throwing yourself at him would win him over and form a healthy long-term relationship. Man, she is really dumb! The only sad thing about her is that she didn't seem to have a circle of supportive girlfriends who would have slapped her back into reality. But that, too, could be traced back to her immaturity and inability to sustain relationships. However, I feel no pity towards her, because despite her moronic infantile strategy towards winning Travis' heart, she was full-grown woman and a functioning member of society.
ReplyDeleteIn her interview with Amy Something (the woman who was speaking in soft voice and kind of kissing Stabby's ass) before the sentencing verdict, when asked what she wanted her legacy to be, she said she wanted to be a cautionary tale for battered women to leave their abusive relationships. Really?! Stabby?! She's like a persistent telemarketer who wouldn't give up calling your house. You know, the most annoying kind. I think in the narcissistic spiteful mind of hers she still thinks she was the good one, she did all the right things, and Travis was the unappreciative one who took her for granted, hence he deserved what was coming. She doesn't realize what she was doing before was not the things you do when you want the guy to fall for you. NO! In her infinite dumbness, she's perfect and pretty, and whoever doesn't see it is a "hater".
Anyway, I'd say she should be cautionary tale for women who lose their self-respect and turn themselves into concubines in vain hopes of developing a healthy relationship with a guy.
"Concubine" - great word and very apropos. Great insights and I appreciate your comment.
DeleteI think one of the most telling FACTS is Stabby's response to the question, (paraphrasing) "Would society be safe if you were to be let out?"
ReplyDeleteIs was "Yes, as long as you're not abusing me". Perhaps some see this as flippant, I don't, this was EXACTLY what she meant.
Hopefully the jury foreman reads this.
Not to forget, that was the same excuse she gave for having the gun and the knives. She had inserted herself into an all guy camping trip with some guys from work, that she barely knew. So, instead of just not going, which is what a normal woman who didn't feel safe would do, she claims she was taking the gun and knives "just in case".
DeleteLooking at how Jodi characterizes abuse, it's really scary. She would feel totally justified in killing Juan, because he was "yelling" at her, and probably totally justified in killing Ryan Owens for asking her such a pointed question, making him a "hater" in her eyes.
And the real scary part is it is her definition of abuse! If the next jury doesn't see her for what she truly is and give her the DP I will loose my mind. She needs to be eliminated or be in solitary confinement for the rest of her life
DeleteSince I first heard it I thought there was something very wrong with the "recorded sex talk tape" Just didn't sound natural. It wasn't a conversation it was almost like it was being read from a script and or heavily edited. This "sex conversation tape" was a key point in the defenses' arguments. I wonder if it was analyzed by the prosecution to determine if it was edited. I concur that she was using it to threaten TA and that evoked his long e-mail. I have also been wondering why the purchase of two (his and hers) bottles of sunscreen from Walmart made at the same time the gas can was purchased was not pointed out by the prosecution as another point of her intent to get him to agree to take her to Cancun or else.
ReplyDeleteI so agree with Anonymous 5:20 AM. That unnatural sounding tape should have been elaborated on by Juan. I believe that may have been one thing he didn't or couldn't do to show Jodi's totally dark devious mind. However. Nurmi was so adept at getting so much crucial evidence ripped away from the State's case that it caused many gaps which would have tied Jodi's motives together. Juan's hands were so tied in this case that I often "felt" his frustration. I hope Juan finds better employment. I truly worried during last Thursday in court-his face was SO red! Not good for health. Good points, Anon!
DeleteAnon.that was brought up (editing) she claimed that she periodically stopped the recording because it was a "new" phone and she was unfamiliar with it. You see? She has an excuse for EVERYTHING! It's utterly maddening. I'll try to find what day she testified about this..
DeleteWhat a smart, intuitive woman you are Camille.
ReplyDeleteThe 'jury foreman' in Australia, is simply the person to see all legalities, paperwork etc is correct. I don't know re your laws. This mans mind was permanently below his belt. That type of man has a certain look, I have personally experienced it several times in my 67yrs. Hopefully on the next go round Juan Martinez will factor more info and comment of these jurors into selection. I soooo hope they go forward, as I believe it is a DP case. This 'girl' cannot be rehabilitated, she is a psychopath.
ReplyDeleteCamille, thank you for your write up. I saw your incoming tweet of the Nodding Juror, on Twitter. I had searched #jodiarias and your tweet did indeed pop up. I found it for you and your readers. Your tweets can be found on the website Topsy: http://topsy.com/twitter/camillekimball?nohidden=1&page=1

Very well written article, Ms. Kimball. I agree 100% that William Zervakos' wrong assumptions about Travis are extremely disturbing. The jury foreman was a wrong choice for the post. He got manipulated by Jodi Arias' ability in changing her facade and demeanor, and hiding her true self. If not, he is also a liar like her. He is identical to the defense team's deceitful psychologist witnesses who were there only for the fame and money.
ReplyDeleteI agree Anon 7:27 AM - my take on Zervakos is that he seems to be a Narcissist dominant type of personality. He craves media attention (as Jodi does) look at how he dominated the GMA interview and often interrupted interviewer. I'm not bashing him, but he is such a turn-off and in some ways as self-deluded as Jodi. I think he got too intimate with Jodi if you know what I mean. A psychologist I'm not so am speaking with a layman's limitations.
DeleteCamille the Jury Foreman, Zervakos, I watched his interview, http://youtu.be/jG_t1jm7pAY
ReplyDeleteHe begins with his first priority, and that is he was not of logic, yet of emotions upon his first day. He related Jodi to someone of his life, of his past. A female he could not save? A female in her 20's? His arrogance shows in the interview, his raised chin. His quoted statements in the press, his words are of they were duped, as jurors. That the system is flawed, they as " jury" were not able to interpret the law as attorney's. He contradicts himself in the interview. He in the GMA interview says, It's not about the Law. As it was explained in the juror instructions, this was not personal this is business. He as foreman in his statements is pandering his own weaknesses for " Jodi" is his end result conclusion of all 12 jurors. His smug, I became her Hero within the final hours of deliberation is not admirable. How if he felt as strongly as he says, now that he is relieved of his duties, how were they were able to conclude: guilty of Murder 1st degree, premeditation established by? evidence? by emotions? by logic? His buy out (sell out) of the DP phase is that his emotions got the best of him. I find him not only deceptive within his statements that they the jury were not informed " of the law" within the DP phase, he found some sort of servitude that by " no decision". His gift, Jodi's entitlement, as she is personal to him. Guilty wasn't his first choice, he was out voted, he then agreed? It's within his voice, his body language, his own statements, he viewed Jodi as misinterpreted and manipulated by the system. He bought this and owned it within the first days of Trial. My gut tells me that he has in his past an unfortunate female that he was in either an intimate relationship with, and or he was in somewhat of a distancing relationship with that was once intimate. He could not save her, as he did not understand his role, that caused her to act the way she did. He incorporated this female into Jodi's statements, her chameleon persona in the court room. His observance, as he, she Jodi looked to him. He then has a person to compare her with, not compare her to. Not unless the female he compared Jodi with is a cold blooded killer. *part 2 of my post next, and I am done*
His doubt of his own moral code was not found in Jodi, it was found in Travis. Was Mr. Foreman not such a great guy to a female in his past, the same female he could not save? he could not retract his own doings? He gleaned knowledge of his own past, via listening to Jodi's lies? As his statement is, as Quoted: "You heard (prosecutor Juan) Martinez say she was only 27,, She's old enough that she should have known better," Zervakos said.
ReplyDelete"I didn't look at it that way. I'm looking at 27 years of an absolutely normal everyday young woman that was living a life that was perfectly normal. Then something changed the trajectory of her life after meeting Travis Alexander, and it spiraled downhill from there." - he by using using Travis's, first and last name is not out of respect, it's out of condemnation. As he saw Jodi as she was observed by him, " absolutely normal everyday young woman" until something changed the " alignment" of her should have been perfect life. As to him she is his ideal girl next door? A high school drop out, a vagabond, a parasite of men for 10+yrs in her own testimony her uglies she slathered with her pixie dust. She perfect, perfectly everyday normal, her perfection became off coarse AFTER she met Travis Alexander. She though by unanimous was found guilty of premeditated murder, as it was plotted, planned, commenced by her own volition, as she said, Yes, I killed him. She not only killed him, she killed him 2 times after he took his last breath. There are MEN who were captured, killed in World War I, II -that suffered less than Travis. She by jury was found guilty of premeditated murder, his own beliefs to be his guide, not logic, not evidence. It is his testimony, if it were not for Travis Alexander " the meteor" who fractured this perfect young woman's life, I would not be seated as I am today, to make this decision of Life in Prison, Death Penalty upon HER. He saw Jodi as personal to him, worth saving, as she remained from day one: compared with a woman he once was within a relationship with. His statement he cannot and does not make a comparison of Jodi's doings, it's not within him to say it, "The system we think is flawed in that sense because this was not a case of a Jeffrey Dahmer or Charles Manson,"
He is not I, it is upon him to speak for all 12: we think, the system is obtuse, he to name drop high profile serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Charles Manson did not kill anyone he ordered others to kill for him. Jeffrey Dahmer was Shanked, no matter his sentence, Prison justice took him out. Charlie remains in prison living the high life, as he knows it is where he belongs. Mr. Foreman no longer, how long will it be before he puts money into Jodi's commissary account? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop? 1,2,3,.. by June 1st it should clear and be deposited. People tell you who they are, and Mr. Foreman has done just this, he has told the Nation, Travis Alexander was on trial, not Jodi. It it weren't for him, her life would have been perfect.
I agree with everything you said except for the
ReplyDelete"pretty eyes" comment?
I still don't understand why people find this rat faced strabic bitch pretty.
But that's an inconsequential detail. Overall, you make very good points!
I think she did have juror 18 in her pocket!!! If you watch all the verdict readings Jodi makes it a point to step in the way of her lawyers to look him in the eyes when he is confirming his verdict. She was shocked when First degree came down because she was sure juror 18 would hold out
