MIke Murdaugh Update -- Love Me Tenderizer

M MURDAUGH

This is the real Mike Murdaugh of Wittman, Arizona. If you werent' terrified by Mike on Wicked Attraction's Love Me Tenderizer episode, you should be.  This hideous specimen delighted in beating and terrorizing and psychologically battering everyone he could, human or otherwise. He had the entire town of Wittman in his hip pocket, thanks to his brutalizing ways. Mike also used a "carrot" along with all his great big sticks: he provided drugs to people he wanted to control.

As for Becky, it's important to point out that at the gas station where she first met the 2nd victim, not only did the man give her his number, she gave him hers.  Becky could hardly have been offended by his interest in her or in the slightest bit frightened of him.  Too bad the man, given the state name of Miller in the show, could not foresee that he should be afraid of her.

There is no question that Becky deliberately lured the man to his awful death. Although she told police over and over that she told Mike about the incident at the gas station out of fear that he would find out from witnesses (such as the cashier, since everyone in Wittman really was in Murdaugh's pocket) anyway and she would be punished if she did not disclose it first, during the days that followed, Becky had a romantic encounter with another stranger from a bar. She seemed to have lost all her fear of him when she went home with the second guy.

For all his brawn and bluster, once apprehended Mike Murdaugh started confessing right away. To both murders. After all the horrible wounds he had inflicted on others, what drove Murdaugh into the arms of authorities? He cut himself pretty bad during the dismemberment of the plumber and sought medical help.

After a few years rotting in an Arizona jail while lawyers dickered, Murdaugh told the court we wanted to "spare the victim's families and his own family" the trauma of a trial. So out of this great well of compassion in his heart, Mike Murdaugh pled guilty. I guess he left that compassion under the bunk the day he threw his own feces at prison guards during that time.

Murdaugh is now on Death Row.

Becky also pled out. She will be released in 2017.   She does not face execution.

"Woody" Dezarn held the other firearm on a night of terror
The other accomplices, who go by pseudonyms in the show, entered Guilty please as well. The man who helped Murdaugh hold the plumber at gunpoint all night is serving a sentence in excess of 15 years but was released in summer of 2011.

Inmate 133865 B GROSS Image

The other woman, who actively helped entice the plumber to Murdaugh's home (more so than was shown in the episode due to time constraints) pled guilty and received the lightest sentence of the four. She left prison in late 2003.

Love Me Tenderizer

Pssst! Going to jail, buying documents, and everything else it takes to get this kind of info for the blog takes time and money! Every time you make a purchase here, it helps me be able to do more for you!

"When evil is present as a pre-existing condition...."

What: New episode of Wicked Attraction
Episode Name: "Love Me Tenderizer"
When: Saturday, Sep. 12, 2012
Where: Investigation Discovery Channel

(Also airing tonight is The Body Shifters episode, back to back with Love Me Tenderizer. Click here for case info on Body Shifters.)

The "Love Me Tenderizer" episode of Wicked Attraction features a case so disturbing I could hardly get through the TV interview.  In the promotional clip posted above, psychologist Dr. Leigh Hagan says circumstances can create evil, "but when you have evil as a pre-existing condition..."

I knew exactly what he was talking about.

The props in this case are a canal, a horse trailer, and a meat tenderizer.  Nothing good happens with any of them. Believe me.

Please check your local listings for the time the episode "Love Me Tenderizer" airs in your hometown. Watch the show...then come back here. I will post an update on the case as soon as the show airs.

Follow me on twitter for your notification that the update is ready!

The Body Shifters -- Tess Damm

Pssst! Going to jail, buying documents, and everything else it takes to get this kind of info for the blog takes time and money! Every time you make a purchase here, it helps me be able to do more for you!

This is not the face anyone expects to see when picturing the mastermind of a ferocious stabbing murder.  The target? Her own mother.  This murder mastermind, Tess Damm of Colorado, was 15 years old when she instigated 3 older boys to slaughter her mother and/or help dispose of the corpse.  Fifteen. Barely out of middle school.

.. in My Photos by

Linda Damm, the mother, was never a contender for Mother of the Year. With a reputation as an ill-tempered alcoholic, Linda was not the warm and cuddly mom in the kitchen baking after-school snacks.   But Tess had a roof over her head and continuous infusions of allowance money to indulge her whims. Linda even allowed her daughter's boyfriend to move in, hoping to keep the party girl home. Plenty of kids have home lives far worse.

Tess had a Romeo and Juliet style fantasy passion going with 17 year old Bryan Grove, a boy who was tempted by violence and obsessed with his own origin as an orphan adopted from India. Once these two strong-willed adolescents met, no one else in the world was of much interest or value. They set their sights on creating their own tiny world, population 2.

Which meant that Linda, who had an irritating way of wanting Tess to go to school and Bryan to pursue getting a job, had to go.

You can see the details of how the pair removed Linda from their lives, but not from the house, by watching for the Wicked Attraction episode called "The Body Shifters."  Here is a bit of video from the show. I'm not in this clip, but I am in the hour long episode first aired July 28.

Within a relatively short amount of time after the murder, Bryan, who had put on great displays of bravado and machismo for his little blond vixen, began crumbling under the weight of regret. His curiosity and taste for violence not only sated but turned to repulsion, he never successfully finished his original plans for disposing of Linda's body.

But Tess's regrets only surfaced upon getting caught and having to trade in her mother's house for the Big House.

Tess Damm in the Colorado Dept. of Corrections

At
At 6'1", Bryan is still a great deal taller than his erstwhile teen love, but at 210 pounds, according to the prison, he no longer outweighs her.

Bryan will stay behind bars for most of his adult life, not being eligible for parole until 2035 and not due for outright release until 2045.

Tess, now 21, will be pushing 30 when she comes up for parole. Tess did not wield the knife, but as the TV episode demonstrates, she was present for some very ghoulish proceedings.  Her sentence will come to an end in 2029.

The two other boys involved received much, much lighter sentences and have already served their time.

Photo of [[Wordd]]Tess+Bryan=xxx[[Yeah duhh]]Bryan had once threatened his own mother, but the incident came to nothing. Tess had spent her teen years bickering with and provoking her mother and winning the sympathies of others over Linda's imperfections. Producers for Wicked Attraction asked me what was the "wicked attraction" between these two young killers?  In my opinion, the facts show that Bryan had a desire to indulge what he believed to be the dark nature he had inherited from his biological and allegedly criminal father. Tess gave him the perfect excuse to unleash that desire.  After the stabbing frenzy was over, he found he didn't like it as much as he thought he would.

But Tess was more sinister. Many other young girls have difficult mothers and pursue academics, dance, arts, or any of  a million other activities or resources to escape. What Tess wanted was not a better life but to win. In the puppy-dog devotion of her hulking and brooding boyfriend, she found the perfect weapon for the ultimate battle with her mother.

That was the Wicked Attraction.

The Decision and the Horse - Court Upholds Hausner Conviction

Today the Arizona Supreme Court upheld all 6 death penalties that Dale Hausner, who once terrorized the Phoenix area as the Serial Shooter, was given at his trial.  You may have heard me on the radio in your home town today talking about it.  If that made you want to know more, here it is.

This appeal was a mandatory appeal that Hausner had no choice in. In fact, he made an effort to stop it but defendants on Death Row get at least one appeal whether they like it or not.

Dale Hausner makes a point to his atty, Ken Everett, during a break in his trial

His attorneys argued that the wiretaps installed in a neighbor's wall was illegal.  It was installed with the express permission of the County Attorney, but not of a judge.  The County Attorney had testified that "the sun was going down, more people were going to die, we had to it."  This is important legally because usually a judge must authorize police eavesdropping on private citizens at large.  In this case, Arizona had a statute in place that gave the County Attorney very limited ability to authorize a tap but only if a public "emergency" was at hand.  At sundown on August 2, 2006, police knew that as the light faded, the Serial Shooter would be gearing up to go out and hunt--hunt all of us.

With the neighbor's permission (imagine that knock on your door, finding a slew of cops asking to use your place as an electronic home base!), the listening device was implanted in the wall shared with  Dale Hausner's unit. A platoon of authorities listened in horror all night as Dale Hausner and Sam Dieteman gloried in reliving their acts of murder and gleefully mocked the suffering of their victims.

By morning, the County Attorney had 1) certainty that he had the right guys 2) the signed authorization of a judge for the wiretaps that had already been installed.

Arizona's Emergency Wiretap law does require that a judge sign off on the tapping within 48 hours. If the judge refuses, the tape cannot be used. The authorities complied with this provision 100%.  What Hausner's attorneys argued to the court was that there simply was no emergency because Hausner was already under surveillance therefore the tape should be thrown out anyway.

The Supreme Court justices didn't buy that argument.  Cop after cop, in some of the most harrowing testimony of the trial, explained how they could not have prevented another killing once the sun went down. True, Hausner was under surveillance at all times once they fingered him, but surveillance, by its very nature, is a game of stealth.  The cops were at least 2 or 3 car lengths back from Hausner's lethal Camry and often were as far back as a mile. Sometimes surveillance was taken over from the air. How was an officer, without a time machine, to jump in front of the Camry and wrestle the shotgun away before he saw it raised through the car window to kill someone?

One permanently under cover officer--I cannot reveal his name--testified he took to rolling down his own window to shout at pedestrians "Go home! Get out of here!" without explanation.  To the pedestrians at whom these frantic yells were directed, it must have seemed the underworld-looking figure was a hopped-up maniac. They will never know he saved their lives.  But it illustrates perfectly how being under surveillance does not equate with preventing murder.

The justices were right to uphold the use of the wiretap* tapes and not fall for the empty argument that we were all safe from gory death because cops were trailing Dale Hausner a mile behind.

Apache suffered terribly from his wounds

There was one victory for Dale Hausner in the court's decision: one charge of animal cruelty was dismissed. The justices ruled that there wasn't enough evidence.  The horse in question is pictured above. His name is Apache. He's a beautiful paint and, on the night he was mercilessly shot, he was the pet of a five year old girl.

Apache suffered terribly and his owner struggled with tough decisions that night. Ultimately, the veterinarian was able to save Apache's life. But, though he tried, he was unable to recover the three bullets. That's right, Apache is still walking around with the evidence inside him.  I believe Apache's family made the right decision that awful night to spare him further pain or risk pushing the bullets into fatal positions with the vet's probe.  Now Apache is a living piece of evidence.  It's still possible that one day the forensics he carries inside him may yet find its way into a lab and be tied directly to Dale Hausner's twenty-two calibre rifle.

Apache carries Dale's secrets within him

Throwing out the conviction on this animal cruelty charge will not make a whit of difference to Dale Hausner's fate. He will still serve hundreds of years in prison...or rather, as many as he can chalk up before they come for him with the needles.

This has been Hausner's mandatory appeal. Whether he now makes good on his stated goal of not appealing the death sentences of remains to be seen.  At trial, he did tell the jury he himself believes in the death penalty. And in jail he did make one attempt on his own life with a cunningly hoarded cache of over-the-counter medicines.

Today the news is that the overwhelming pile of evidence against Dale Hausner is still visible, still viable, and still forming a wall of imprisonment around him.  The critical wiretaps have been endorsed by the highest court in the state.  Anyone who has listened to those sickening tapes will be relieved.

The case of the Phoenix Serial Shooter was the first time any one had ever used the Emergency Wiretap Law. If ever there was an emergency that threatened imminent  death to untold numbers of innocents, it was the Summer of the Serial Shooter.

*The listening device in question is more properly known as a "bug" because it was not installed on Dale Hausner's phone. But at trial it was referred to as the "wiretaps" and the justices specifically repeated that nomenclature in their decision.

TV Shoot This Week - Watch For Air Date

True Crime Author Camille Kimball shoots another TV show
We were already breaking down the set before I remembered to take pics! The crew had come in from out of state.

Except for Rusty, whom we've worked with before. Rusty keeps the sound pure and even, wrangling the whir of AC units, passing planes, and the occasional wail of a street performer's saxophone.  Thanks, Rusty!

Cinematographer Jacin we've happily worked with before, too.  At his last visit, Jacin became an enthusiastic fan of Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe. But this time, I learned Jacin is a true foodie with a blog of his own. Visit Jacin's recipes and ruminations from the road here. Don't let the title of his blog fool you, he's an EXCELLENT cinematographer (and I happen to know was trained by the bestest, too, so he better be!).
Producer Melissa poses with Cinematographer/Foode Jacin
Keeping all the plates spinning, as is the crazy job of any TV producer, was Melissa. Melissa had gathered eight thousand pages of documents in pursuit of this story.  You think it takes time and concentration to read and absorb eight thousand pages of testimony, forensic reports, and the like? Try distilling them all down to an hour's worth of television?! My hat is certainly off to Melissa for tackling this massive story.

There are so many people who step in in big ways and small to shepherd along a TV show. I would like to thank them all right here though some will have to remain anonymous. You know who you are!

I don't know the air date yet, but I will announce it here when I do. Hope to see you on TV!

Behind the Scenes Shooting Another TV Show

Pssst! Going to jail, buying documents, and everything else it takes to get this kind of info for the blog takes time and money! Every time you make a purchase here, it helps me be able to do more for you!

I've been pretty busy this week....

Behind the scenes as TV crew puts it all together

...another TV crew came to town!

That's cinematographer Jacin Buchanan making me look good. And soundman Brian Sepowitz getting the microphone just perfect.  We feasted at Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe first, so they were in a good mood! (Hey, keeping the crew happy is the First Rule of Television--I knew Mrs. White's would do the trick!)

Now, does this look like a happy crew?!
They are such professionals I thought I was on a Spielberg set. Jacin revealed one of my favorite videographers is his mentor. (I would love to give this artist a plug here, but he told me he's publicity shy so I've gotta respect that.)  I mentioned his name and Jacin's eyes sparkled. I knew I was in good hands when Jacin declared, "I'll go him one better!" Indeed, the lighting turned out soft and lovely, the framed shot dimensional.

And the sound flawless. Engineered by Brian to eliminate all rustles, no external traffic noise was allowed to infiltrate the set. I expect to sound like I exist in richly tapestried Vatican chambers! Or maybe get a chance to takeover Kathleen Turner's voiceover gigs? Alas, if only Brian would follow me everywhere to make me sound so good.

Do you notice how each of these photos is perfectly framed with interesting context and dynamism? This isn't due to cropping or any other photo chicanery--it's all because ace director Chip Selby snapped these photos and used his director's eye to create a story in each picture, even though all he had to use was a cellphone.  Finally, we got him to step in front of the camera...
Chip Selby standing, left, oversaw a seamless TV shoot
Chip got the best work out of me and made it feel easy. His enthusiasm for the story and the show quickly swept me in so I could leave my nerves behind.  I admired how deftly he guided me.

It's too soon to tell you what the show is but I can tell you it's national and they flew in from out of state. Today they are shooting scenes in the desert. After that, out of Arizona and off to more adventures!

I'll post more pictures as we get closer to air date....oh! When I know the air date, I'll post that, too! Of course, I'll post the name of the show, too!

To Chip, Jacin, and Brian- So glad to meet you and be placed in your care. I learned something from each of you. What a pleasure!

This is the Book About Dale Hausner

Detective Smith being interviewed by Wicked Attraction
Wicked Attraction's "Shoot to Thrill" episode is based on my book, A SUDDEN SHOT.

Here are a couple of snapshots from when the TV crew was in Phoenix filming it.

For more photos, click the FaceBook badge to the right or navigate this site using the Dale Hausner tag.
Serial killer survivor Paul Patrick, Author Camille Kimball, Wicked Attraction crew Darin and Rusty

From the book:

The blood dripping down was his own, to his astonishment, and now that he saw it, he felt the searing pain. Now he knew the shot had landed on his own body. He had no idea where the shot had come from but he could now see and feel in the dark where it had landed, a confusingly wide swath of his own body--his arm, his back, his torso. He ran through the signage and the shrubs and the cactus, leaving blood the entire way, and staggered in the lobby of the Hotel Radisson...

Sweat Lodge, James Ray Discussion on KTAR Tonight

ADD: Blogger is chopping off words. Although they appear properly in 'edit' mode, some have disappeared behind the pic of Ray with Larry King. It is supposed to say "By the time of the sweat lodge deaths, Ray was a bona fide celebrity in his industry and well known outside it." Ray was NOT outside the sweat lodge at the time of the deaths--that's why he's in prison now. But blogger is doing some weird formatting conjuring and it appears I cannot fix it.

Camille, Jay and a big microphone in the KTAR studios
Anxious to share your feelings or ask some questions about the jail sentence just handed down for motivational speaker, James Arthur Ray?  KTAR's Jay Lawrence has invited me into the studio tonight and we welcome your calls. That's Sunday night, November 20, 2011. Jay's show usually starts at 7 pm sharp, but this afternoon KTAR is carrying the Giants vs. Cardinals football game. No one, not even if you have a Secret, can predict exactly when an NFL game will end, so it's impossible to say exactly when Jay's show will start tonight, it might be as late as 7:30 or beyond.

marshWhenever we do start, we will devote the first hour to the horrible story of 3 people who died in a Sedona sweat lodge in 2009 and the man who was held criminally responsible for those deaths, James Ray.

http://www.issues.cc/uploads/38281153341.jpg
Ray shot to prominence by his appearance in the "New Age" philosophy film, The Secret, and appearances on Oprah and Larry King and with his book, Harmonic Wealth.  By the time of the sweat lodge deaths, Ray was a bona fide celebrity in his industry and well-known a bona fide celebrity in his industry and well-known outside it. But a small town detective and prosecutor brought down his empire. He left the Yavapai County courthouse in the historic Prescott town square in handcuffs and he is now taking his meals on a metal tray with a tin cup. Well, it's probably a fiberglass tray and plastic cup, but it's hard not to fall into frontier lingo when speaking about Prescott

KTAR is 92.3 on the FM dial. It streams live on the internet if you are outside Arizona, and many people interested in this story are. Jay will let you know when it's time to call in.

Later in the evening, Jay and I will take on the other stories of this action packed week. See Jay's KTAR page or his FB page for what's on his mind. Hey, I'm just the passenger, he's driving the thing, let's see where he takes me!

Hope to hear from you tonight!

GO TO THE KTAR HOME PAGE. TO THE LEFT OF THE RED KTAR LOGO AT TOP CENTER IS A LITTLE BLUE ARROW, JUST 1/4 INCH AWAY. CLICK THAT, A SEPARATE WINDOW OPENS AND VOILA YOU WILL BE STREAMING. CLICK ON 92.3 FM NOT 620 AM.  (it doesn't seem to form a separate link or I would have put it here. it probably does but i'm not techsavvy enough to figure it out)

P.S. Watch me and the rest of the people from the Dale Hausner serial killer case on TV tomorrow morning (Monday). The show is called Wicked Attraction and airs on the Investigation Discovery Channel.
