The day the photo on the book cover was taken: Author Camille Kimball interviewing Marjorie Orbin in jail

Marjorie Orbin was convicted in 2010 of fraud and the dismemberment murder of Jay Orbin, the devoted father of her child. Many months later, paper work has gone through regarding the restitution she must pay and to whom.

To Jay's father and mother, her former in-laws, the court calculates $6,014.00. This amount, clearly, is not about how much Jay was worth as a person and what they've lost. It is about what actual expenses they incurred during the course of the case. And, even at that, it is not a full amount. The courts have formulas for these things. If Marjorie ever does make any money, these are liens that will be a priority.

To Jake Orbin, Jay's big brother, Marjorie will have to pay $12,200.00 if she ever gets any cash. Jake is guardian of his nephew now. Jake went to a lot of trouble trying to discover his brother's fate and then trying to make the world a safe place for the little boy left behind.

Finally, Marjorie will have to pay $8,539.38 to the person who lost the most, her own son. Noah lost both a father and a mother and an entire childhood when Jay Orbin died. But it is in his capacity as heir to the estate that Marjorie defrauded that Noah becomes his mother's creditor.

That's a total of $26,753.38

I am a little disturbed by a TV show that pops up from time to time. The show states as fact that Jay was "obsessed" with Marjorie for a decade. But there's no evidence of that. The entire Orbin family had never heard of her until her sudden wedding to Jay in Las Vegas. Marjorie loves to tell the story that Jay was pining for her for 10 years and that he pressed her into marriage. But Jay is not here to tell his side and the evidence of his alleged 10 years of passion does not exist. The whirlwind wedding in Vegas was far more the much-married Marjorie's style than the family oriented Jay's.

Marjorie writes to me that she is doing fine in state prison. The food is better than in county jail. She gets her beloved physical exercise. And she's confident she'll win a new trial through her appeals.  (peek inside the book here or here)

  2. Ah, well, that's a good reason to get the book, isn't it!?! I explain a lot more detail that 48 Hours didn't have time for. (Just click on the photo of the books in the middle of the post--it will take you right to Amazon. Or look for links to other sellers below or above right) There's a lot of testimony on that very question and I give you both sides in WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  5. That 48 Hours Diary of a Showgirl episode is controversial. Some were offended the show gave her so much unfettered air time. Others, like yourself, feel it just served to give her enough rope to effectively convict herself. Still others found her to be tragically innocent. I'm glad you stopped by. Have you seen her love letter? <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7961681502337822401#editor/target=post;postID=786400145943889026>New Photos From Marjorie Orbin Crime Case<a/> I will post more stuff on her from time to time.

  6. As for Marjorie's comments stating that she's confident she'll win a new trial on appeal...

On November 03, 2011 her 1st appeal (direct appeal) was officially denied by a 3 judge panel. Her conviction was affirmed. Yeah!!! :-)

She can now try a "post conviction appeal" but her chances for success are even slimmer (the particular facts of her case don't bode well for a post conviction appeal). The process will take years and won't end well for her.

After that she can try a "Federal appeal" (many years in the future) but that's an even steeper mountain to climb.

Looks like Marjorie will spend many years in prison. :-)

  7. Thanks, Anon of Dec 21. That's an excellent analysis. I do make it a policy not to argue with Marjorie and always try to represent her point of view as she expresses it to me. Having said that, I think your assessment is better informed than hers. For those interested in the decision on Marjorie Orbin's appeal, here is my post on it.

  13. The one who pays here is Noah. I hope being with Jay's family brings him strength and love, enough to overcome such hardship. I NEVER wished any harm to my sons father, because that IS A DIRECT HIT TO MY SONS HEART! How could she be so selfish??? Your book, What She Always Wanted describes Marjorie as acuratly as possible. She always was a munipuative b*#@h ... she got what she deserves. I am just surprised she survived all the former lovers and ex husbands... and/or didn't kill any of them before this.... she was evil in her 20's and evil still.

  15. Noah is well loved by his family. He is doing well, but we can all agree that losing both his parents in the manner that he did is ghastly. At least everyone in his family shares the same grief. Noah will never have to feel alone in that. Jay was also well loved and many people are interested in the welfare of his child so Noah has a great and extensive support system. To have one parent murdered by the other is a fate no child should be burdened with. I agree that whoever does such a thing is directly hitting at the person's children as well.

    ReplyDelete
  16. No child should be taken from their mother. I do not approve of people telling the media the child is in a loving home that home is not their home it is a home he was placed in because his mother was wrongly convicted of murder she did not commit. Of course they wills ay the boy is fine who would come clean and say the boy cries for his mother, wont sleep at night, has nightmares? That would mean their wrong! The truth ALWAYS comes out and it will int his case as well no matter how much later in life. The system is so flawed in America it seems beyond repair. Whenever a society becomes COMFORTABLE with innocent people going to prison and being put to death because IT HAPPENS that's when its time to step back and rethink things! America is no place for families and people who live in other countries wanting to come here should thank God they do not live in America it is a sick place!

  17. Hi Camille, I was wondering why this was considered Murder and not Manslaughter when there is no doubt that Jay was supposed to be out of town that night? Proves to Me that it wasn't premeditated. Sounds more like a Man who surprised his Wife and Her lover. I believe Jay confronted Larry, they fought and Larry shot and killed him. She had a young Boy sleeping while His Dad was dead in the garage. She panicked. She is guilty of helping cover it up. Just my thoughts. It's a sad case.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I totally agree. He returned home unexpectedly due to the stormy weather. I think she helped cover up for Larry as he seemed a militant type of character on the stand, also him taking on the squad of sharpshooter policeman was bizarre behaviour. I don't understand why the hairs found on the crate weren't tested either?? The agent was told no testing would be done. He said he spoke out about a few cases that not all evidence was being taken into account. This is unacceptable.

      Delete
    2. I agree with u both. I dont think she killed Jay. Her past and her behaviour after Jay was killed worked against her

      Delete
    3. The only thing Larry is possibly guilty of is helping her dispose of the body but he cut a deal so he can't be charged. She did and planned it. The story you heard was her defense. What you didn't hear was after Jay was murder she went on a spending spree. That doesn't sound like a grieving widow or someone who was scared. If Larry did murder Jay then why didn't she later go to the police told them what happen and ask for protection.

      Delete
  18. That is Marjorie's own version. She has been telling as many people as she can about it...after the trial. However, for this story to succeed on any level, there had to be more of a reason than "don't wake up Noah." She claims that reason was a threat against Noah's life. But on many, many occasions, she was away from Larry and even alone with police, Noah in safe hands. Why wouldn't she beg for protection at that time? And now that she is telling the story, why hasn't the threat against Noah's safety come to pass?

There are many details about the jigsaw, the garage cleanup, Larry's "deal," and all the evidence on both of them in the book, WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED. It would be interesting to hear your opinion after you read it. I was present in court and often sat right behind Marjorie. The book is available at libraries if you don't want to spend the $7.99. Many of your questions are already answered in there.

As for Noah having nightmares, I'd be surprised if he didn't. That's the murderer's fault, no one else's.

    ReplyDelete
  19. BTW, a murder committed for capital gain and with premeditation is considered 1st degree Murder. There was no question of manslaughter because there was too much evidence this was a deliberate and calculated crime.

  20. Camille,
Hello from juror # - oops, I seem to have forgotten my juror number. One of my fellow jurors just sent out an email wondering how Marjorie's appeal turned out and I sent them all back a link to your blog.

We all agreed that the evidence of premeditation was overwhelming.

To kaleigh_harris1 - had you been in the court for the trial and listened in on our deliberations you would be in little doubt that she did receive a fair trial and a just verdict. Our concerns during the sentencing phase of the trial were, in part, the welfare of Noah and the possibility that he might at some point in his future life wish to see his mother.

To anonymous who wondered how she could have moved Jay Orbins body to the desert - don't forget that she moved him in parts and that she had a ramp she could use to move the body up into her vehicle. Also, she was a physical fitness fanatic and was much stronger than you imagine.

One final thought that came to me as I was reading over the comments above - we did discuss the theory presented by the defense that pointed to Larry as the guilty party. The problem with that theory is that there was no evidence presented that would support the theory and it seemed to us to be little more than a distraction provided by a defense that had no real exonerating evidence to present.

  27. It's an interesting question as to whether Marjorie had help moving the body. We know she had a dolly. That's mechanical help. There also people she confided in much more deeply than she did in Larry. All I can tell you is that after several years of intense investigation, no evidence has been found to implicate Larry.

    2. I’m sorry but anyone who thinks that Larry Weisberg didn’t at the BARE MINIMUM help with the body & dismemberment of it is absolutely deluded, imo. He was probably the shooter. Sounds to me like Jay came home early/unexpected while Larry was in the house & then shit went down. Marjorie was married SEVEN times to MUCH richer men, but this is the guy she decides to murder over his $1.5M business? Nah, that doesn’t add up.

Plus how is everyone just dismissing his behavior when Marjorie was on the phone, shouting obscenities in the background and saying for the detective to go fuck herself? Or when he became combative when the SWAT team executed their search warrant and then had to be tased? That bodybuilder meat head probably had roid rage to the max. You’re all out of your minds if you think he wasn’t highly involved in this, it not directly responsible. What evidence would there to be to implicate him? The lack of it doesn’t change my mind at all. It’s common sense.

  28. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jay but I very much enjoyed listening to the stories told by my husbands father (Jays first cousin) and grandmother (Jays Aunt). The tradegy that took place is one that no family should ever have to deal with.

I would like to read the book to see more into what Marjorie has to say. We all watched the interview on television, and she didn't make herself very convincing. She did a very good job at showing how much she was spoiled yet so unappreciative.

  31. Yes, Angela, Marjorie is also featured on a 48 Hours Mystery episode called "Diary of a Showgirl." I wasn't ready to go on camera at that time, but I couldn't avoid being in the background in several of the shots. One thing that's interesting about all these shows on Marjorie is that each one comes out differently. The family and the courts were upset about the 48 Hours episode and you can read more about that in my book, WHAT SHE ALWAYS WANTED.

As for your family's skepticism about your interest in true crime, you may wish to take a look at this blog post and see if you can use it. 32. After watching the 48 hours show on the situation it really doesn't have a good case. I also watch the crime shows faithfully and the things that all the other ones point out weren't true with this case. I don't think people should put down dancers because they can be the best people and as far as the shopping thing goes, anytime I'm upset I shop til I can't shop no more. I'm not saying she's guilty or not but I am saying maybe they wanted it to be her. In the other shows they go as far as it takes down to littlest lead and in this one they don't. I feel she should get to see her son. Did they ever see if she had a testimony on where she was? I mean she told on herself that she did help because she was threatened. I'm sorry for jays family, I know how it feels to lose someone and she doesn't have a great case with that video of her buying those items but the person who may be in on it may still be out there.

  33. You have to remember there is a certain formula to TV shows. They need to emphasize the angle of the red herring in order to increase the sense of mystery. But that doesn't always do justice to the evidence. Larry Weisberg has been investigated up, down, sideways, and all around. No evidence has ever been found to connect him to the crime.

As for visiting with her son, don't forget the boy has a choice in the matter. No one is stopping him. His feelings about seeing her may change as grows up.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

    ReplyDelete
  34. How old is her son now? There are so many variables it definitely looks like she is guilty...if not the murder itself then definitely a premditation to have him murdered somehow. She was able to move a body of 260lb because it was dismembered. It was not in one piece. I am a 5'5" 145lb woman and I can lift 275lbs with ease...sounds crazy but I can. It is possible...maybe not probable.

Should Noah have the facts that we all have (probably plus some we never hear of), he most likely has or will make up his mind about his mother and her guilt. Really, it is none of our business what goes on within that family. We, the public, just LOVE to see other people's dramas unfold before our eyes and evenmore, we LOVE to judge those people.

NOONE will ever truly know what happened except the TRUE killer...either Marjorie herself or someone else....all we have is specualation...

  35. Noah Orbin is now a teenager and living a nice life, the great tragedy notwithstanding. He goes to high school and has extra-curricular activities. He has a loving family, all of whom share the same grief. So while nothing can make this right, at least they are all in it together. He is always given the opportunity to make his own age-appropriate decisions about the case. There was no way to keep it from him. Indeed, as you say, there are some things that he alone actually knows about it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights here, Girl of a Different Color.

  37. to Girl of a Different Color, I would suggest that Marjorie, if she "done it," probably no longer knows the truth of what occurred. It is probable that her lies to others have also convinced herself of non-involvement, at least on a direct basis.

  40. Marjorie Orbin is a personality-disordered, manipulative and exploitative individual. She is right where she belongs, in a place full of women of her own ilk. Were she to get out, she would only victimize and manipulate another person because that's how she gets along in life. She will not get parole unless she admits to her crime. I don't see this happening as she is still lying and manipulating people into believing in her innocence. She feels no guilt or remorse for her husband Jay. She is only unhappy she got caught. People like Marjorie can never be changed, cured or reformed. Stop sympathizing with her. That's what she wants. She would walk all over you in a split second to get what she wants.
