Mike Watkiss with Paul!

Here's the link. I don't know if I've done it properly. I'm sure KTVK will straighten me out if I haven't. Look at that round head! Woooohoooo!

Serial shooter victim Paul Patrick back in hospital

azfamily.com's Mike Watkiss revisits Paul Patrick, the man who became the face of the victims in the serial shooter case.

Share this article:

The staples are titanium...and so is the guy!

Paul survived his skull re-attachment, to the intense relief of gathered family members. He is in a lot of pain but still found the strength to host KTVK's Mike Watkiss bedside. A camera wasn't far behind and soon Paul was telling everyone for himself how determined he is to survive and thrive. It played in the 5:00 newscast. I'll try to put up a link to the interview if I can figure it out.

Mike Watkiss called Paul Patrick "the toughest guy I know." I couldn't agree more! What Paul has gone through and keeps coming back for more is nothing short of amazing.

It's hard to get used to seeing him with the "round" head. I've seen the "divot" for so long, a full skull takes some getting used to! Imagine how it feels to Paul?! Oh, almost forgot to say, it takes 160 titanium staples to keep that patch of skull in place. Whew!

Fairy Dust Needed Today for a Frozen Skull

Long after the prison doors clang shut, the headlines vanish and the lawyers have moved on to other cases, the crime itself is still right where it always was--at the epicenter of a heartbroken family. Paul Patrick was shot by a serial killer in Phoenix in 2006. That wretch is now behind bars. I sometimes cross paths with the excellent lawyers who put him there, when I walk the halls of justice in downtown Phoenix. They are on their way to other courtrooms with other cases and so am I.

But when Paul Patrick walks, it is down his own hall, with the help of two professional aides. And a camera nearby to record it. Because it is a momentous event, Paul taking a few steps. The 12 gauge shotgun in Sam's hands blasted away a good deal of Paul's torso. The eighty or so lead pellets still inside Paul have a tendency to move around and cause him a great deal of trouble. Earlier this year, roving pellets brought him so near death there was only one chance to save him, and that was by attempting to remove half his skull. His mother--whose vigilance is the only thing that has kept him alive on many occasions since the day he was shot--said she just wasn't ready to say good-bye to him yet, so she authorized the almost ridiculously desperate procedure. Against all odds, Paul survived. He has been living without his skull for 9 months now. There is just skin covering the right half of his brain. Any stray elbow or falling nightlight could do him in forever.

Today, the neurosurgeons have decided it's finally time to put the skull back. There is no need to explain how risky this procedure is, I think it speaks for itself. Will it bond? will it swell? will it get infected? will it still fit?

Today is a day people can "light a candle in a dark room" for Paul. Justice and the news machine have moved on. But Paul is still living the same case. He has no choice. I cannot do what I fervently desire, and that is to sprinkle fairy dust on the hands of the surgeon, on the freezer that has kept his skull for almost a year, on the tubes and machines that will keep him alive for the next few days. What I can do is leave no stone unturned in finding people who will blow him a kiss, cheer him on, tell him a joke. Anyone who wants to root for Paul today or send him a Christmas wish can do so here or at the FaceBook page. He and his mother will see the messages, I promise.

Paul's would-be killer has expressed a lot of remorse. He's doing his time, which will be for the rest of his life. But what I learned from this trial is that those things are a tiny part of crime-fighting. Paul fights the crime every day, every minute, for the rest of his life, too. Sam's remorse can't help him now. But your love and well wishes can.

Big Name, Big Style

He is handsome and gracious and held the audience in the palm of his hand. I can't say enough good about our evening with iconic author Joseph Wambaugh.

If by some miracle of fate you don't know him, he is the LAPD cop who burst onto the literary and pop culture scene in 1971 with The New Centurions. His gritty tales--both fiction and non-fiction--of police and their work have influenced and made possible shows like Hill Street Blues and The Shield.

At the Poisoned Pen on a cool December 2 evening, Wambaugh showed why he has been successful enough for a hundred lifetimes. He told charmingly shocking stories of actor James Woods who starred as an unknown in Wambaugh's self-produced The Onion Field. He did an imitation of Truman Capote and snuck us inside the In Cold Blood author's Palm Springs home on a day when it was 120 degrees. He brought us curbside to an almost-shakedown of out of work and forgotten Robert Blake in pre-Baretta days on an evening when a pre-famous Wambaugh was in a patrol car and how the term "Little Beaver" formed an instant connection between the two. And he raised us back up to the heights of glamour on set with Johnny Carson.

Watching Wambaugh work was like a master class in the art of being a raconteur. It was also a master class in being a very big person as he frequently and generously shared the spotlight with old friends, fellow cops and even little old moi.

He had the knack for zeroing in on the heart of the matter in seconds as he wrote the exact perfect thing in a book for Paul Patrick and one for Cliff Jewell (hey! they don't know it yet! it's a surprise--they wanted to go but couldn't make it--so a little Wambaugh is coming to them!).

If you ever have the chance to see this gentleman--and I mean that word in its highest literal sense--in person, do yourself a favor: go!

New York Times sees Dale

Lead sentence in a New York Times article paints a picture of Dale in his cell.

I was there the day they lead him off to Death Row. He shielded his face from me with his prison paperwork as he passed near me. Don't know if that was for my benefit or for the pool video camera which was somewhere behind me. He seemed to love that video camera. But for those who've been to my presentations, we know that on at least one occasion he was hiding his face specifically from me. Will never know for sure, though, about that day who he was keeping his face from.

He did turn to the jurors who were directly across from me a few paces and thank them. Thank them for giving him the death penalty, that is.

The NYT article is not about Dale per se. He just makes an appearance up top. Seems the state wants to turn his care and all of Death Row over to private parties. What do you think? Is there profit in keeping Dale fed and secure?

Guest Post from Crime Reporter

Check out hard boiled reporter Jim Thomsen's interview with me. Scroll down and see his interview with prolific True Crime author Diane Fanning, too.

Jim Thomsen Thanks to author Camille Kimball for an interesting conversation on how true-crime authors work — and on how "A Sudden Shot" came together.

Source: tinyurl.com
Camille Kimball, like everybody else in Phoenix, lived in fear during parts of 2005 and 2006 as the “Serial Shooter” prowled the city streets day and night, wounding and killing people and pets at random. ...

A Moment to Thank People

A lot of work goes into putting on one of these events and a great deal of it is done by people like Library Manager Lesa Holstine of the Velma Teague Library in Glendale. Her facility is a beautiful one, in the middle of Murphy Park anchoring charming downtown Glendale. They do a lot of events. If you haven't tried it before, keep an eye on them and pick out one you'd like. It's free!

Afterwards, do like I did and walk over to Zang's. The best calamari ever and a selection of Asian dishes from Singapore to Thailand. I understand the mac and cheese (with bacon) is pretty dang popular for those with more American tastes. Owner David Chang--who speaks an astounding number of languages--will make sure you are happy.

Since we're in Glendale, I can't miss the opportunity to recommend you stop by Cerreta's Chocolate Factory when your day is through. Pick up a bag of lightly sweet caramel corn or be brave and get the jalapeno corn to see you through the rest of the weekend. Keep your eye out for Mr. Cerreta who might be stirring the chocolate himself just across the rail!

That's what I love about Glendale--a lot of charm and the people in charge right there taking care of you the whole way. Thanks for having me, Glendale!

Gumshoes in Glendale

Homicide Detectives Cliff Jewell (left) and Darrell Smith (right) regaled the crowd at the Velma Teague Library as only a couple of murder-hounds can. My only claim to keep company with such exciting guys was on the big black screen above--the private photos I brought.

The investigation into the Serial Shooter involved well over 300 people so when they get together for these events, some times they are hearing each other's stories for the first time.

I was very pleased to have in the crowd Glendale Fire Investigator Mike Blair who also played an important role in this case. He snagged a book for Glendale Fire Chief Burdick, too.

Delighted to see KYOT's Melissa Sharpe sneak in, too. She's a real fan of the book and I thank her for this interview.

The fans are great. We even had one gentleman who had run into key witness Ron Horton a few times and had some stories of his own to tell, which had us all spellbound.

Glendale was a good place to be on Saturday!

Meet the guys

Pleased to report Detective Darrell Smith will be joining Detective Jewell and me at the Velma Teague Public Library in Glendale Saturday afternoon. Presentation begins at 2 pm.

Darrell is the critical link between the Wal-Mart arson investigation and the Serial Shooter Task Force. He came to know informant Ron Horton very well. Can't wait to hear his stories!

It's at the library and is free, but books will be available for purchase for those who wish them.

Transcending evil--Heroes from "A Sudden Shot"

Have you wanted to meet Paul Patrick, whose story is inspiring
so many? Here he is. This is the guy with the roses, the guy
who never gives up, the guy who none of us can stop thinking
about.
After you watch, you may wish to leave a message of encouragement for
Paul. You can do so here or click on the FaceBook badge to the right.

Thanks to my brother for giving up his weekend to shoot and edit this home video.
He's an executive, not a photographer but after reading about Paul, it was a labor of love.

Couldn't be happier

Filled up the Poisoned Pen Saturday with eager citizens oohing and ahing over "my" guys!

Shotgun survivor Paul Patrick mustered the strength to attend....and this time brought me chocolate! I was too greedy to share and will be gobbling it down myself at home. Paul's presence left everyone in awe of him.

Phx PD Officer Darren Burch blushed a little as we made him come up front. I was beside myself to be able to show him off. When you read the book, you'll see what his quick thinking was able to do with a rubber shoe in a life and death moment. If you've already read the book, I know you're oohing and ahing right now--yes, the rubber shoe guy! We even convinced Darren to join the "assembly line" we had set up and sign autographs.

Homicide Detectives Cliff Jewell and Ron Rock autograph books, author Kimball signing, center

Homicide Detective Cliff Jewell brought his private photos and tidbits. The crowd forgot I existed as he took over and gave the inside view of the case. I couldn't be happier!

We even grabbed a big imaginary shepherd's hook and pulled Tolleson Detective Ron Rock up to the front and before he could stop himself, he was taking questions, too.

Our Henry Ford style signature factory started with me (who doesn't count, at all), then people moved on to Ron Rock, then to Cliff Jewell, then to Paul Patrick (who only has one very damaged hand to do this with) then finished up with Darren Burch. That's a whole pack of heroes for less than 8 bucks! Can you really afford to miss one of these events? ;)

If you were there, please send in your photos to asuddenshot at gmail.com so I can post them! If you make hard copies, write me there and I'll give you an address to mail them and I'll put them in the big scrap book for the next event.

And thanks again to Paul for the chocolate! I did put out Cerreta's Jumping Cholla taffy--which everyone loved!--for everybody else, but I had to hoard Paul's gift for myself!

P.S. (next stop, West Valley, check list at right)
P.P.S. ( a wee confession: Paul, I'm having chocolate truffles for breakfast!)

Private files....exposed!

Anything goes...now that Homicide Detective Cliff Jewell has retired. I happen to know he's poking through his private files right now, seeing what he can bring to the Poisoned Pen on Saturday afternoon to share with you.

Hey! I've got private files, too! I wrote in the book that even 325 pages is not enough room to tell all the stories so my office is still chock full of photographs and tidbits that haven't seen the light of day yet. Sneak a peek at them on Saturday when Cliff and I make a joint presentation.

The spirits tell me that Tolleson's Ron Rock, the first detective to get his Spidey senses going, will be in the audience. I promise to make him sign books and tell a few stories of his own.

Get at least three autographs (you never know who else might show up that you'll want to have sign your copy!) and see extra photos and material on Saturday. Think I might just have to bring some of that Jumping Cholla taffy from Cerreta's with me, too!

Where: Poisoned Pen Book Store
When: Saturday Sep 26
Time: 2-4 pm
Address: 4014 N. Goldwater (In Scottsdale, on block south of Indian School, just west of Scottsdale Road)

Hollywood vault!

What a charming little strip of Los Angeles did I discover when Chevalier's Books welcomed me and KNX Friday. The bookstore has been in the same spot for decades. Before the books came, there was money, and it was locked up in that vault behind me and Chevalier's French speaking Norman Dixon.

Yup, this cute little pied a terre started the 20th century as a bank. Note the giant hinges you can see just above my shoulder--that's a big cast iron (or bronze?) vault. That newspaper clipping is hung from the open door. No longer home to bags of money, the vault now houses stacks of bookstore treasures like....books!

Our saltwater taffy from Cerreta's in the unique Arizona flavor of Jumping Cholla was a big hit. The flavor has quite a little kick to it. If you have ever tangled with the sinister Jumping Cholla cactus for real, you'll understand why!

At 126 N. Larchmont, Chevalier's and its neighborhood--which is also called Larchmont--are a delightful discovery. Can I out KNX's Ron Kilgore for spying Edward Kretzler's "Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean" on the shelves at Chevalier's? The Larchmont district has a pedestrian-friendly small town feel. It's as if Mayberry were dropped into the heart of Los Angeles. That is, if Mayberry were packed with culture and good food. I had the best moussaka I've ever had across the street from Chevalier's at Le Petit Greek.

Drop by Chevalier's and ask if they have any of our Jumping Cholla taffy left (we put out a big tray--it's pink, you can't miss it). Practice your French on Norman. Hey, ask them for A Sudden Shot: the Phoenix Serial Shooter while you're at it. It's only $7.99. I won't even mind if you ask for the pirate book instead. ;)

Links to Chevalier's and Cerreta's and the Larchmont district are to the right.

Hollywood and candy, what else do you want?

Please join us Friday afternoon in Hollywood at Chevalier's Bookstore.

I'll bring yummy Arizona style treats from famed confectioner Cerreta's (treats are on me!)

I will also give away a copy of the book signed by detectives and survivors (I'll sign it myself, too, if you make me).

These are people you want to meet...and you will find them in the pages of A Sudden Shot: the Phoenix Serial Shooter.

"This is a superb book. For those of us who didn't live in Phoenix during the time of the Serial Shooter, the book takes us right there - we feel the terror, we feel the horror of hearing a gunshot and finding a neighbor, a friend, a pet shot.

I absolutely adored this book and can not recommend it high enough."
--Shauna Nelson, Amazon reviewer

"Hi Camille, I just finished reading your book today (couldn't put it down!). I'm in awe of the mountains of research you must have done to accomplish such an outstanding read. Your book made me realize suddenly why I write true crime--to inspire and to tell an amazing story that no one else has the guts to reveal. I'm sure it was gratifying and rewarding to see how much your book touched the lives of the surviving victims and paid tribute to the ones whose lives were lost."

Supersleuths Sign!

The people of Tolleson/Avondale/Litchfield Park kept ace Serial Shooter detectives Cliff Jewell and Ron Rock busy signing books on Sunday afternoon at Borders. The Chief of Police came by (I insisted on a raise for Ron!).

What a great delight it is for me to introduce these hard working detectives directly to the community who wants to shake their hands and thank them. (I tear up just writing that.)

But if it's possible to be more emotional, it's when the three of us recognize a surviving family member come through the doors. Citizens want to give them hugs of comfort and these are graciously accepted.

People sometimes ask me if it's hard for the families to read the book.

Let me tell you---the families already know what they've been through.

They've mostly gone through it alone. To feel the good wishes from their fellow citizens, hugs and handshakes that tell them, "you're not alone, your loved one will not be forgotten, your pain means something to me," does them a WORLD of good.
